Falcons fall in quarterfinals

Wilson, NC – The Pfeiffer University women’s basketball team fell to Barton College 79-68 in a Conference Carolinas Tournament quarterfinal game on Wednesday evening.

Pfeiffer finished its season at 9-20 and the Bulldogs rises to 22-5 overall. Number one Barton will entertain 5th-seeded Anderson at 7 PM Friday in one semifinal while #2 Mount Olive hosts #3 Belmont Abbey in the other semifinal. The championship is slated for a 2 PM start Sunday at the site of the highest remaining seed.

Barton, ranked 7th in the Southeast Region, trailed for much of the initial half. The Falcons were nursing a 30-25 lead with 6:31 left in the first half when Barton went on a 12-2 run. Senior guard Blair Burke (Raleigh, NC) started the spree with a three-pointer, followed by baskets by Sara Fleming (Stanley, NC) and Jannetta Robinson (Willard, NC).  Esty Flores (Virginia Beach, VA) finished off the run with a three-pointer and two free throws. The Bulldogs were up 44-36 at intermission.

The Falcons pulled within four points early in the second half, but Barton never trailed after the late first-half run and led by an average of seven points for the remainder of the game.

For the Falcons, Domonique China (Durham, NC) swished a team-high 17 points on 8-of-14 shooting and dished off eight assists. Shanee Purnell (Woodbridge, VA) canned 16 points and pulled 12 boards for a double-double. Devona Knight (Woodbridge, VA) also notched a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds for Pfeiffer, which had a 54-46 advantage in rebounding.

Flores finished with 18 points, eight assists and Fleming netted 17 points. Jamila Johnson (Garner, NC) contributed 12 points, five assists and four steals. Robinson scored 12.

Barton outscored its foe 19-6 in points off turnovers and 13-6 from the foul line. Pfeiffer was 29-of-73 (39.7 percent) from the floor while Barton hit 30-of-79 shots for 38 percent.
