Mount Olive slips past Pfeiffer

Banner Elk, NC – The Pfeiffer University Lady Falcons lost a five set thriller (14-25, 25-16, 23-25, 25-18, 18-16), taking the score to 18-16 in the fifth, allowing the Mount Olive Trojans to advance to the final round of the Conference Carolinas Volleyball Tournament at Williams Gymnasium in Banner Elk, NC Friday afternoon.

In set one Pfeiffer dominated, walking off the court with a 25-14 win, only to see Mount Olive even the match in set two when they took control winning 25-16.  Set three proved to be a back and forth contest with Pfeiffer taking a slim 25-23 victory.

After getting down 4-10 in set four, Mount Olive went on a ten point streak to forge ahead 14-10, then pressed on to win 25-18 forcing the match to a fifth and final match.  Pfeiffer pulled ahead 9-4, forcing Mount Olive to take a timeout.  Inspired Mount Olive clawed their way back into the match evening the score at 13.  The score was tied at 13, 14, 15 and 16 before Mount Olive was able to win two consecutive points claiming an 18-16 win and giving them a shot at the Conference Carolinas title on Saturday.

Petra Ljubicic (Asheboro, NC) led the way for Pfeiffer University (27-6) with 15 kills, while Lauren Spiotta (Batavia, NY) added 13.  Brittany Dickens (Wake Forest, NC) threw down 10 kills and had three block assists.  Brittney Poole (Sparta, NC) served up three aces and had 21 digs in the Falcons’ effort.  Morgan Liebert (Huntersville, NC) put up 44 assists and had 13 digs.

Setting the pace for Mount Olive was Alicia Mote (Miami, FL) who had 19 kills in the upset victory.  Teammate Racey Bartley (Jacksonville, NC) added 14 kills, two block assists, one block solo and three service aces, while Corie Skislak (Gulf Breeze, FL) had 10 kills, five block solo and two block assists. Joanie Werling put up 42 assists in the winning effort.  On the defensive side Kari Hamm (Kinston, NC) and Mallory Peavler (Loda, IL) had 14 and 13 digs respectively.
