Volunteering is horseplay for PU WLAX

Richfield, NC- While most of their peers were fast asleep, the Pfeiffer women’s lacrosse team was already hard at work on a farm last Saturday. The Lady Falcons spent their morning at the 3M Farm clearing land for horses.

The lacrosse team worked together to clear a paddock area with a natural spring in order to create more livable space for the horses. The Lady Falcons were excited to use the weed whackers, hedge trimmers, and leaf blowers given to them to get the job done. With a total team effort, the lacrosse team was able to successfully clear the area of all possible risks of injuries for the horses, including briar bushes. The horses will now be able to move around more freely without risk of getting cut by any of nature’s hazards. The team also got to feed the horses some tasty snacks at the end of their day of hard work.

3M Farm is owned by Candy Hooker, a Pfeiffer student, and her three children are involved in the 4-H program. Junior co-captain Ashley Hill regularly works on the farm with Hooker and commented about the community work that the farm is involved with. “What’s nice about this horse farm is that it is one of the only 4-H clubs in Stanly County that you don’t have to have your own horse to join,” said Hill.  “With the work that our team did, we have made it possible for more horses to live on the farm, which ultimately means there are opportunities for even more kids to participate.”

As stated by the NC 4-H’s website, the mission of 4-H is to be “a youth organization committed to building outstanding citizen leaders with marketable skills to succeed in today's global society.”(nc4h.org)
