Women's Soccer opens up 2009 Campaign with 2-2 Draw against Catawba

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Pfeiffer University and Catawba College battled to a 2-2 draw opening up the 2009 women’s soccer season on Saturday afternoon at N.E. Lefko Field. The Lady Falcons took a brief 2-1 lead in the 85th minute before the Lady Indians fought back for the tie with a goal in the 87th minute.
In the final five minutes of play, Pfeiffer’s Alyssa Wombwell (Grand Blanc, MI) headed home a cross from the right goal line sent in by Ashley Hawkins (Madison, NC) to regain a 2-1 advantage. Catawba responded just under two minutes later on a shot ten yards out from Alyssa Retundie (Mooresville, NC) that found the back left post for the final tally of the afternoon.
Megan Blevins got things going on Saturday with her first goal of the season in the 17th minute on a penalty kick as Catawba goalkeeper Chelsea Binder (Woodstock, MD) committed the foul against the Lady Falcons Kirsten Bartsch (Leesburg, VA). Pfeiffer would hold that 1-0 lead at the half.
Meritt Rollins (Columbia, SC) evened things up for the Lady Indians finding the back of the net just outside the 18-yard box in the 54th minute. Catawba outshot Pfeiffer 20-7 in the match.
The Lady Falcons return to action on Friday night taking on Mars Hill in Jefferson City, TN. Pfeiffer’s next home match is Wednesday, September 9th against USC-Aiken at 4:00 p.m.
