Reaves Helps Women's Soccer Fight Back for Double OT, 2-2 Draw at Queens
September 19, 2009
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – After 110 minutes of play, a winner could still not be decided as Pfeiffer and Queens battled to a 2-2 tie in women’s soccer action on Saturday afternoon at the Queens Sports Complex. Two ten-minute overtime periods turned out to be not enough as the Lady Falcons improve to 2-3-2 overall with the draw, 0-1-1 now in Conference Carolinas play. The Royals now move to 2-5-1, 1-0-1.
Queens would tally both of their goals in the first half of action while the Lady Falcons would knot it up late in the second 45 minutes of regulation play. Lauren Vawter put the Royals on the board first with an unassisted goal in the 13th minute. Vawter took a deflected pass attempt and found the back of the net for an early 1-0 Royals lead. In the 23th minute after a yellow card was issued to Lady Falcons goalkeeper Suzie Hinman (Idaho Falls, ID), Kristen Wright put home a penalty kick that put the hosts up a pair.
Ashley Hawkins (Madison, NC) put Pfeiffer on the board with her first of the year just after the half in the 51st minute. Hawkins would take a pass from Megan Reaves (Mims, FL) and connect from the right side of the 18-yard box. Reaves would assist on the game-tying goal in the 84th minute, this time to Ashleigh Rhoads (Palm Bay, FL), helping send the contest into OT. Rhoads beat Royals keeper Kristen Kornacki one-on-one with the equalizer.
Kornacki made a pair of saves on four Pfeiffer shots in the first overtime period. Hinman didn’t have to stop a shot in either extra frame as Queens managed only two shots in extra time with one in each period. The Lady Falcons, still in search of the first conference win, will see if third time’s the charm on Tuesday at Mount Olive.
