MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – Cara Paxson scored both Mount Olive goals, but a Pfeiffer goal late in the second half evened the match and the Trojans settled for a 2-2 tie in Conference Carolinas women’s soccer Tuesday at Amon Field. The match was the second tie in three years between the two teams and the third overtime match in the last five meetings.
Mount Olive (3-4-2 overall, 1-1-1 Conference Carolinas) scored its quickest goal of the season as the Trojans grabbed a 1-0 lead just 88 seconds into the contest. Caroline Smith served the ball from just inside the midfield line at the far sideline into the Pfeiffer box. The ball took a bounce and Paxson headed the ball into the goal for her first goal of the season.
Pfeiffer (2-3-3, 0-1-2) tied the match at the 17:51 mark as Megan Reaves played the ball from the right corner to Alyssa Wombwell, who scored from just in front of the goal. Mount Olive narrowly missed going ahead late in the half when the Pfeiffer keeper had to come off her line, but Pattie Adkins’ one-touch from the top of the box went just wide of the left post as the two teams went into halftime tied.
Mount Olive regained the lead early in the second half after Tia Rose was fouled in the Pfeiffer box. Paxson converted the ensuing penalty kick – the Trojans’ first pk attempt of the season – to give Mount Olive a 2-1 lead at the 50:45 mark.
Trojan goalkeeper Lyndsey McIntyre made saves on three close-range shots shortly after the penalty kick to preserve Mount Olive’s lead. But Pfeiffer evened the match at the 83:14 mark when Wombwell crossed the ball to Sam Brown in front of the Trojan goal. Brown’s shot caromed off the bottom of the crossbar twice as the ball was ruled just inside the goal line.
Mount Olive came within inches of scoring the game winner two minutes into the first overtime. Rose’s chip from inside the Pfeiffer box got past goalkeeper Suzie Hinman, who had to come off her line. But the ball trickled just wide of the right post.
The Trojans outshot Pfeiffer 4-2 in the overtime periods, but Hinman recorded two saves and the match ended in a draw. Hinman finished the match with five saves for Pfeiffer, while McIntyre had four saves for Mount Olive. Pfeiffer finished with a 16-12 shot advantage.
Rain in the first half conjured up memories of the two teams’ last meeting at Amon Field in 2007 when a second half downpour left field conditions unplayable and the match was stopped at the end of regulation, resulting in a 3-3 tie. Mount Olive captured a 4-3 overtime victory over Pfeiffer in the semifinal round of the 2005 conference tournament and a 3-2 overtime win at Pfeiffer during the 2006 regular season.
Mount Olive kicks off a three-match road trip Saturday as the Trojans travel to Spartanburg, S.C., to take on Converse in Conference Carolinas action. Match time is 2 p.m. Pfeiffer plays host to Anderson Saturday at noon in a Conference Carolinas match-up.
