Win Streak Snapped as Women's Volleyball Falls 3-0 to Wingate

INDIAN TRAIL, N.C. - The Wingate University Bulldogs hit a season-best .426 for the match, as they swept the Falcons of Pfeiffer University 3-0 in NCAA Division II volleyball action Sunday night at Carolina Courts. The Bulldogs won by scores of 25-11, 25-17 and 25-22 to improve to 24-1 overall while winning their 12th straight match. Pfeiffer falls to 15-7 overall, snapping their 12-match winning streak.
Junior middle blocker Stormi Gale (Richmond, Texas) led the Bulldogs with 17 kills while hitting .615 for the match. Junior outside hitter Lauren Billo (Orland Park, Ill.) added nine kills and a .353 hitting percentage, while freshman middle blocker Grace Krauser (Louisville, Ky.) chipped in with eight kills and a .667 hitting percentage. Sophomore setter Liz Willis (Raleigh, N.C.) handed out 39 assists to go along with six kills, five digs and three aces. Sophomore libero Maggie Malone (Chicago, Ill.) racked up a match-high 21 digs, while senior defensive specialist Chelsea Cancelliere (Richboro, Pa.) added 11 digs.
Freshman outside hitter Jordan O’Bryant (Reidsville, N.C.) led the Falcons with nine kills and a .400 hitting percentage. Freshman middle blocker Abbie Ovbey (Mt. Gilead, N.C.) added six kills for the Falcons, while freshman setter Vanessa Gerig (Towanda, Ill.) handed out 23 assists.
The Bulldogs used a 5-0 run to take a 14-4 lead in the first set. Junior middle blocker Rebecca Bloemer (Louisville, Ky.) had three kills late in the spurt, while Krauser capped the run with a kill. Kills from Gale and senior outside hitter Jacki Emmenecker (Perrysburg, Ohio) made it 18-7. The lead would not go below nine the rest of the way, with a block from Gale and Billo capping the set. The Bulldogs hit .405 in the first frame, with 18 kills against three errors.
A kill and block from Krauser, along with a Billo kill and Willis ace gave Wingate a 14-7 lead in the second set. A 3-0 run capped by an Emmenecker kill made it 19-10. The lead would not go below six the rest of the way, with Emmenecker finishing the set with a kill. The Bulldogs hit .467 in the second frame, collecting 16 kills against two errors.
A kill from Gale gave Wingate a 16-11 lead in the final set. The Falcons cut it to three on an ace from sophomore libero Kaci Markham (Asheboro, N.C.). A Willis kill stretched the Wingate lead to five at 19-14. Pfeiffer answered with four straight points, capped by a kill from junior outside hitter Kristina Mordini (Freeport, Ill.) to make it 19-18. A Bloemer kill put the Bulldogs on top by two, Gale followed with back-to-back kills to make it 23-19. Gale finished the set with her 17th kill. Wingate hit .412 in the final set, collecting 18 kills against four errors.
The Bulldogs racked up 52 kills in the match against nine errors in 101 attacks for the .426 hitting percentage. Pfeiffer had 27 kills and seven errors in 88 attacks for a .227 hitting percentage. The Bulldogs had eight aces on the night, led by Willis and Gale with three each.
The Bulldogs return to action Wednesday, traveling to Brevard for a 7 p.m. start. Pfeiffer will host St. Andrews Wednesday at 7 p.m.
