Men's Swimming Opens Up with a Win; Women Drop Heartbreaker at Milligan

ELIZABETHTON, T.N. – Pfeiffer University opened up its 2009-2010 swimming season on Saturday afternoon at Milligan. The men finished with a 140-102 win, while the women dropped a 108-107 heartbreaker to the Buffs. The Lady Falcons broke two more records, in the first two events swam, in the season opener.
In event one, the women broke the 200 medley relay record with a time of 2:08.90, topping Milligan by 14 seconds. Yukina Onoda (Concord, NC) jumped in first, followed by Haley Carter (Huntersville, NC) and Julianna Prim (Yadkinville, NC) while Nicole DiVaccaro (Woodstown, NJ) swam anchor.
In the women’s second event, the mile, Prim broke the school record with a time of 18:12.73, four minutes faster than her Milligan opponent. The Lady Falcons won 11 of the 14 total events.
On the men’s side, Patrik Persson (Gothenburg, SWEDEN) picked up the Falcons first event win of the season with a first place finish in the men’s mile swim. Persson touched for a final time of 18:11.14. Persson also finished with the top spot in the men’s 400 free with a time of 4:39.22. David Angell (Parker, CO) scored a couple of event wins in the 200 back (2:16.10) and 200 IM (2:34.94).
Both the men’s and women’s swim teams will be back in action on Saturday afternoon. Pfeiffer travels to the Virginia Military Institute for a 2:00 p.m. meet.
