Late Rally Falls Short; Anderson Holds On for 112-108 Win over Men's Basketball

Box Score

MISENHEIMER, N.C. Ė Down by as many as 16 with 8:40 left to go in the second period, Pfeiffer University nearly completed the comeback falling just short of Anderson University 112-108 in Conference Carolinas menís basketball on Monday night. The Trojans led the Falcons 12-7 in made three-pointers shooting 54.7% from the field. Anderson, having the ball bounce their way on many tough shots throughout the night, improve to 12-4 overall, 7-3 in conference play. The Falcons see their four-game win streak come to an end falling to 11-5, 6-4.

Nick Trull (Charlotte, NC) knocked down a wild layup at the 8:40 mark that put Anderson up 16, 69-85. After a layup and a three-point play the hard way by Athalie Rivera (Baltimore, MD), Pfeiffer had cut the deficit back to 10, down 87-77 with seven minutes to play. Trull would complete a three-point play of his own pushing the Trojan lead back to 15 before the Falcons were able to reduce that lead back into single digits after an alley-oop from Jeff Pettiway (Edgewood, MD) to James Crowder (High Point, NC) brought Pfeiffer to within nine.

A Pettiway free-throw got the hosts within four at 95-91, but Anderson went on a 7-0 run in 47 second span capped off by a pair of free throws by Brandon Young (Belmont, NC) that gave the Trojans a 102-91 lead. Down by 13 with 1:38 to go, Pfeiffer was eventually able to cut that margin down to four after a Pettiway three with 29 seconds to go. After a Tony Anderson (Greenville, SC) free throw put Anderson up five with 10 to go, a quick layup by Pettiway brought the contest to a one possession game. Oskars Ernsteins (Rigas, LATVIA) would then hit two crucial free throws in the final five seconds allowing Anderson to hold on for the win.

Individually, Anderson put five scorers in double-figures led by Andersonís 28, Youngís 25 and Trullís double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Pfeiffer was led by Chris Woods (Thomasville, NC) and his 27 points, with Pettiway finish one point behind him with 26.

The Falcons did shoot 49.4% from the floor, but only 27% from behind the three-point line. A momentum-swinging contest saw Anderson hit the big, wild shots late, not missing many free throws when it counted most. Pfeiffer missed a dozen free throws on the night.

The Falcons will look to re-group on Thursday night at Lees-McRae, before hosting Queens in a nationally televised matchup on CBS College Sports (also carried live on FS Carolinas and FS South) at noon on Saturday.
