Late Lead Slips Away as Women's Basketball Drops Fifth-Straight

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Pfeiffer led by as many as nine points midway through the second half, but Mount Olive used a game-ending 12-2 run over the final four minutes for a 66-60 victory over the Lady Falcons in Conference Carolinas women’s basketball Monday at Misenheimer, N.C. Charlotte Fuller led Pfeiffer with 11 points, while Laporsha Davis had a game-high 18 points for Mount Olive.

Pfeiffer (11-13 overall, 11-8 Conference Carolinas) built a 10-point lead during the first half and held a 50-41 advantage with 11:04 left in the game after a basket by Shelley Reese. Pfeiffer was still up 58-54 with 4:17 remaining, but the Lady Falcons would not score again until the final minute.

Mount Olive (14-10 overall, 13-6 Conference Carolinas) pulled within one on Andrea Jones’ three-pointer. Shequanta McGee’s layup with 2:51 remaining put the Trojans ahead to stay at 59-58, the Trojans’ first lead of the second half. Jones followed with a fastbreak layup and Helen Moore hit 4-of-4 free throws to help seal the win.

In the first half, Pfeiffer scored nine of its first 10 points from beyond the arc, but the Lady Falcons trailed in the early going. Fuller’s three-point play and Celeste Caudill’s three-pointer ignited an 8-0 run to put Pfeiffer on top 20-15 with 8:51 remaining. The Lady Falcons would stay in the lead until the final minutes of the contest.

Pfeiffer took its biggest lead at 32-22 on Brittany Cox’s three-pointer with 3:23 left before halftime. Mount Olive got as close as four on Davis’ three-pointer and a three-point play by McGee. Fuller hit a pair of free throws for Pfeiffer with 49 seconds left and the Lady Falcons went into the locker room with a 36-31 lead at the break.

Mount Olive got as close as three early in the second half before Pfeiffer pulled away for a nine-point advantage. The Trojans chipped away and Moore’s basket with 4:36 left cut the margin to 56-54. Janilla Harris scored on Pfeiffer’s next possession, but Mount Olive took control for the remainder of the game.

Harris and Caudill finished with nine points apiece for Pfeiffer, while Cox added eight points. Three Lady Falcons had six rebounds apiece as Pfeiffer outrebounded Mount Olive 43-36. The loss was Pfeiffer’s fifth in a row.

Davis finished with 17 points and six rebounds for Mount Olive, while Moore added 14 points, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals. The win was the Trojans’ eighth in their last 10 games.

Both teams return to action Saturday with Conference Carolinas match-ups. Pfeiffer plays host to St. Andrews Saturday at 5:30 p.m. Mount Olive entertains Lees-McRae Saturday at 5 p.m.
