MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Military Appreciation Day turn out to be a success off the field and an even bigger success on. Pfeiffer University honored area veterans with 5-2 and 8-0 victories over visiting Goldey-Beacom College in non-conference softball action on Friday afternoon. Dawning camouflage jerseys for the event, the Lady Falcons swept their way past the Lightning improving to 6-8 on the season. GBC drops to 0-2.
GAME ONE: Pfeiffer 5, Goldey-Beacom 3
Each team traded runs in the first frame as Danielle Rice (Mullica Hill, NJ) scored Leanne Miller (Vineland, NJ) with her base hit to right-center. Amber Johnson (Spokane, WA) reached on a single back up the middle and moved into scoring position by swiping second. After a sacrifice bunt by Mariah Chalk (Hickory, NC), Johnson would score the game-tying run on a balk by Lightning starter Tori Anne Davies (Bear, DE).
Chalk gave the Lady Falcons a 2-1 lead in the third as her ground ball to short brought in Kylee Nichols (McMinville, OR) from third. Nichols reached with a lead-off double to left and moved to third on a Johnson sac-bunt. As Pfeiffer starter Allison Braswell (Asheboro, NC) sat down 17-straight Lightning hitters, the Lady Falcons would tack on three more late runs and held off Goldey-Beacom for a 5-3 win.
In the fifth, Andrea Wagner (Wauseon, OH) scored on a wild pitch after beginning the stanza with a double to left-center while Chalk and Sarah Waylock (Cary, IL) scored on an error and wild pitch in the sixth.
The Lightning put two on the board in the seventh, but Braswell settled down to retire the side and earn the complete game win. A Shannon O’Hara (LaPlata, MD) RBI-double put GBC within three before Angelica Myers (Honey Brook, PA) dropped down a bunt for the final RBI.
Braswell didn’t allow a single base runner between Ashley Paige’s (Middletown, DE) two-out bunt in the first and her one-out single in the seventh. Braswell struck out eight in the win.
GAME TWO: Pfeiffer 8, Goldey-Beacom 0 (5 innings)
Pfeiffer broke open a close contest midway through game two with a six-spot in the fourth en route to the 8-0 win. Nichols put the hosts on the board with a two-out RBI single in the third before the Lady Falcons took advantage of a pair of Lightning errors in the fourth.
The big blow in the fourth was Sam Taylor’s (Surrey, British Columbia) two-run single to left-center. Johnson picked up the only other RBI in the frame with a single to left. Waylock, Wagner and Taylor would all score on either a GBC miscue or wild pitch. Heather Nobles’ (Angier, NC) RBI-single to right in the fifth gave the Lady Falcons their eighth-run as the contest came to an end with the NCAA’s eight-run rule.
Brown notched the shutout in game two allowing just two hits with four strikeouts. Waylock led the way offensively in the double dip with a pair of hits in each game going 4-for-6 with two runs scored combined. Rice and Paige had the hits for the Lightning in the nightcap.
Pfeiffer returns to action on Sunday heading to St. Andrews for a Conference Carolinas doubleheader with the Knights beginning at 1:00 p.m.
