February 27, 2010
MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Pfeiffer University and Coker College each earned a win in a Conference Carolinas baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Joe Ferebee Field. Behind a Trey Lynch (Florence, SC) grand slam, the Cobras took game one 8-4 while the Falcons bounced back in the nightcap with a pair of three-run blasts by Eric Shoemaker (Huntersville, NC) and Carlos Badillo (Gurabo, PR) for an 8-6 victory. Pfeiffer improves to 7-10 overall this season, 4-4 in league play. Coker moves its mark to 10-5, 4-4.
GAME ONE: Coker 8, Pfeiffer 4
Tied 2-2 heading into the eighth inning, the Cobras put the first three runners aboard that set the table for Lynch. Matthew Kearns (Bay Shore, NY) started the frame with a hit-by-pitch followed by back-to-back infield singles by Nick Fuoco (Palm Bay, FL) and Jordan Buenting (Ankeny, IA). Lynch then delivered taking a 3-2 fastball to the opposite field for the grand slam and a 6-2 Coker lead. Jessie Crockett (North East, MD) later contributed in the six-run inning with a two-run shot to left.
Pfeiffer took a 2-0 lead early on as Aarin Sharpe (Wintervile, NC) registered an RBI-single in the first while Zack Pou (Stanley, NC) hit a solo shot to center leading off the third. Coker put lone runs up midway through as Lynch plated on a fielding error by the Falcons in the fifth and brought home the game tying run with an infield single in the sixth.
The Falcons tried to battle back with a sacrifice fly by Shoemaker in the eighth and a ninth inning Preston Lyon (Gastonia, NC) run-scoring triple to left-center, but came up short as Sharpe popped up on the first pitch he saw to end game one.
Mike Palko (Euclid, OH) earned the victory for the Cobras going 7.1 innings allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits with six strikeouts. Lynch finished 3-for-5 with five RBI and two runs scored. Pou had three hits for the Falcons in five plate appearances.
GAME TWO: Pfeiffer 8, Coker 6 (7 innings)
Coker broke up a scoreless game two in the fourth with another Lynch round-tripper, scoring two, after a Buenting leadoff double. Drew Hardee (Rock Hill, SC) brought in the third run with a one-out single to center.
Pfeiffer bounced back in the home half of the fourth with a six-run frame thanks to three-run bombs by Shoemaker and Badillo. Pou and Sharpe singled to be aboard for Shoemaker’s shot while Will Davis (New London, NC) and J.T. Pope (Mebane, NC) had two-out singles to keep the inning alive for Badillo.
Coker again came right back with three more in the fifth for a six all tie. Lynch, picked up his eighth and ninth RBI of the day with a two-run double to left while scoring as teammate Daniel Hiatt (Elwood, IN) was in a rundown between first and second. Hiatt took off on a steal attempt as Falcon reliever Luke Wilhelm (Lexington, NC) tossed to first for a pickoff attempt. Hiatt kept the pickle going long enough for Lynch to score just before the third out tag was applied to Hiatt.
Pfeiffer’s final runs came in the fifth and sixth frame to salvage the Saturday afternoon split. Lyon struck with a go-ahead one-out dinger to left in the fifth while Pou came through with a two-out single up the middle in the sixth.
Wilhelm earned the win in relief tossing the fifth and sixth innings for the Falcons. Andrew Oliver (Cornelius, NC) picked up the save in the seventh with a strikeout, not allowing a run or a hit.
Both teams will meet again on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. in the rubber game of the three-game set.
