Baseball Has Chances Late; Fall Short of Comeback in 14-9 Loss to #5 Mount Olive

Box Score

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Fifth-ranked Mount Olive College started quick with a five-run first inning and got themselves out a couple of late jams en route to a 14-9 win over Pfeiffer University in Conference Carolinas baseball action on Sunday afternoon at Joe Ferebee Field. The Trojans improve to 17-1 overall, 8-1 atop the league’s standings while the Falcons dip to 10-13, 6-6.

Each team pounded out 13 hits in the affair with Pfeiffer trying to catch up from the get-go. Michael Knox (Cary, NC) picked up where he left off on Saturday with an RBI single to put the Trojans on the board. After Dan Hayduk (Browns Mill, NJ) singled home Jeremy Nowak (Cheektowaga, NY), Mount Olive took advantage of an infield throwing error to score three unearned runs to end the first.

Preston Lyon (Gastonia, NC) put the Falcons on the board with his first of two solo shots on the day before Mount Olive tallied three more runs in the third with a Knox two-run bomb to left followed immediately by a Hayduk blast for an 8-1 visitors lead. Pfeiffer came back with a pair in the fourth on a Josh Strickland (Liberty, NC) two-run dinger before the Trojans again responded with two, a half-inning later on a two RBI single by Ryan Faison (Oldsmar, FL).

In the Pfeiffer sixth, Lyon led off with his second round-tripper of the day before Strickland doubled home Will Davis (New London, NC). Aarin Sharpe (Winterville, NC) brought the Falcons to within two, down 8-6, with a base hit back up the box to plate Strickland.

Mount Olive wasted no time in responding yet again with four more in the seventh to pull away. With the bases loaded and two outs, Jesse Lancaster (Goldsboro, NC) was hit by a pitch to bring in the first run and keep the inning alive. The very next hitter, Nowak, drilled a double down the left-field line to clear the bases and extend the Trojans lead. The Falcons tried to battle back with three in the eighth, with one potential swing making it a one-run game, but ran out of time.

In the eighth, Myles Pearl (High Point, NC) drew a bases loaded free pass before Zack Pou (Stanley, NC) scored two with a single to left. Saturday’s game two hero Eric Shoemaker (Huntersville, NC) was at the plate with the bags full, but grounded out to first to end the threat.

Nowak led the Trojans with a 4-for-6 afternoon with three RBI while Knox behind him in the lineup went 3-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored. Coupled with Hayduk in the fifth slot, Mount Olive 3-4-5 hitters combined for a 9-for-13 afternoon with a pair of homers, four doubles, eight runs and eight driven in. Pfeiffer was paced by Lyon going 3-for-5 along with Strickland. Mount Olive’s Curtis Hudson (Elgin, IL) earned the win tossing seven frames improving to 3-0.

Pfeiffer now enters a week long stretch of non-conference games beginning Tuesday and Wednesday at Mars Hill and at USC-Aiken.
