Softball Swept at Cross-Town Rival Catawba 12-0, 6-4

SALISBURY, NC - Catawba swept a softball doubleheader from visiting Pfeiffer on Tuesday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Catawba Indians rolled to a 12-0 win in the opener then held off the Falcons for a 6-4 victory in the nightcap. Catawba improves to 14-9, while Pfeiffer falls to 10-12.

Allie Marshall (Pleasant Garden, NC/SW Guilford HS) got the Lady Indians started in the opening game with a two-run homer in the first. It was the start of a five RBI game for the senior. Carly Sabat (Warren, OH/Howland HS) doubled home two runs in the second and Marshall added a two-run single in the third as Catawba stretched its lead to 9-0.

Catawba had nine hits in the opener and drew another eight walks. Sabat was 3-for-4 with four RBI. Marshall had two hits, while Kathryn Geouge (Canton, NC/Pisgah HS) drew three walks and scored three runs. Brittany Murray (Asheboro, NC/E. Randolph HS) tossed four scoreless innings to improve to 9-1 on the year. She allowed just two hits and struck out seven.

The Lady Indians built a 5-0 lead in the nightcap before withstanding a Pfeiffer rally in the sixth. The first six Falcon batters reached to trim Catawba’s lead to 5-4. Sarah Waylock (Cary, IL) drove in two of the runs and Heather Nobles (Angier, NC) greeted reliever Sami Santoli (Nesconset, NY/Smithtown West HS) with a run-scoring single to draw Pfeiffer within a run. After a sacrifice put runners at second and third, Santoli got a pair of outs to keep the Lady Indians on top.

Tara Gibbs (Waynesville, NC/Tuscola HS) gave Catawba an insurance run with a RBI single in the sixth and Santoli survived a hit and a walk in the seventh to post her second save of the year. Gibbs finished with three hits and three RBI in the nightcap. Kelsie Hudson (Mechanicsville, VA/Lee-Davis HS) got the win on the mound. She tossed four shutout innings before running into trouble in the fifth and allowing the four runs.
