March 20, 2010
MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Pfeiffer University used a walk-off walk in the bottom of the ninth in game one and a pair of home runs by Myles Pearl (High Point, NC) in game two sweeping Limestone College 6-5 and 3-2 in Conference Carolinas baseball action on Saturday afternoon at Joe Ferebee Field. The two wins push Pfeiffer to 15-17 overall, 8-6 in league play while the Saints fall to 10-17, 5-9.
GAME ONE: Pfeiffer 6, Limestone 5
The bottom of the ninth began with a leadoff double by Zack Pou (Stanley, NC). After a failed sacrifice and groundout, an intentional and unintentional walk to Eric Shoemaker (Huntersville, NC) and Will Davis (New London, NC) brought Aarin Sharpe (Winterville, NC) to the plate with the bases-loaded. With a 3-1 count, Sharpe took a fastball upstairs for ball four, scoring Pou with the game winning run.
Pfeiffer struck first earlier in the contest as Sharpe secured the first of his three RBI with a groundout in the second. Limestone came back with two in the third thanks to a passed ball that scored Michael Hughey (Gaffney, SC) and RBI infield single by Drew Lydon (White Plains, MD).
The Falcons regained the lead with two in the home half of the third as Josh Strickland (Liberty, NC) picked up an RBI-single in front of Sharpe’s run-scoring double to left-center. Pfeiffer held that lead to the sixth when a Luke Beasley (Gaston, SC) RBI-single to left and bases-loaded walk by Lydon brought the Saints to within one at 5-4. Josh Troutman (North Augusta, SC) would tally the Saints final run on a wild pitch in the seventh.
Strickland led the way for the Falcons going 3-for-4 in the opener while Sharpe put together three RBI. Beasley had three hits for the Saints. Reliever Luke Wilhelm (Lexington, NC) earned the win tossing 3.2 frames allowing one unearned run on one hit with seven strikeouts.
GAME TWO: Pfeiffer 3, Limestone 2
Little offense was needed in game two as both starters worked into the sixth inning. Pfeiffer got on the board with a solo blast from Pearl in the first before Limestone tied it up on the first of six errors committed by the Falcons in game two.
The Saints grabbed a 2-1 lead in the fourth as Casey Seay (Rock Hill, SC) picked up an RBI-single to left that brought home Troutman. Down by one in the fifth, after a one-out single by Carlos Badillo (Gurabo, PR), Pearl delivered again with the eventual game-winning two-run shot to center for a 3-2 Falcon advantage.
Austin Campbell (Charlotte, NC) tossed into the seventh frame in game two, going 6.1 allowing two unearned runs on three hits with three strikeouts in the win. Andrew Oliver (Cornelius, NC) picked up the final two outs via strikeout earning the save. Limestone starter Matt Crisp (Gastonia, NC) took the tough-luck loss surrendering both of Pearl’s home runs while striking out four in six innings of work.
The Falcons and Saints will meet again on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the three-game series at Joe Ferebee Field. Due to possible afternoon weather, first pitch has been moved up to 12:00 p.m. from originally-scheduled 1:00 p.m.
