Gamble Scores Seven Times as Women's Lacrosse Comes Up Just Short at Rollins 17-16

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, FL -† Rollins saw scoring efforts from eight different players, including hat tricks from Katy Tyszko, Marissa Giannerini and Erica Pagliarulo, as the Rollins womenís lacrosse team downed Pfeiffer University 17-16 in regional action on Saturday afternoon.

Rollins (4-3) had a strong first half against the Falcons (7-2), leading by as much as seven in the opening stanza, but had to fight their way out of a three goal deficit in the final seven and a half minutes of regulation to grab their fourth victory of the season.

The Tars found themselves up 13-10 in the second half with 19:54 on the clock.† But two yellow cards on the Tars within 13 seconds of each other left Rollins down two players on the field for a solid three minutes, allowing Pfeiffer to notch three straight goals and knot the score at 13-13 with 14:58 remaining in the contest.

Pfeiffer continued to take advantage as the Tars scrambled to recollect themselves in the ensuing minutes after the penalties, scoring three more goals to lead 16-13 with 7:42 remaining on the clock.

But Rollins rattled off four-straight shots between the pipes, and held the Falcons silent in the final three minutes of action to hold onto the one goal advantage.

Joining Tyszko, Giannerini, and Pagliarulo on the scoreboard were Liz Connelly, Mallory Surpless, and Sophie Townsend with two apiece.† Tori Snow and Sarah Ann Showell netted one each to close out the goal scoring, with Connelly and Snow registering two assists, while Tyszko earned one assist of her own.

Snow led the Tars in draw controls with five, and was closely followed by Giannerini and Connelly who each grabbed four, as the Tars dominated the draw 21-12.† Pfeiffer led the ground ball count by a slim 28-26 margin, but were a perfect 6-for-6 on free position attempts compared to Rollinsí 3-for-7 mark.

The Falcons were led by Allie Gamble with a game high seven goals on the afternoon.† Jessica Kennedy, Liz Melesh, and Shannon Bonnel notched two each, while Heidi Karaszkiewicz, Alex Cook, and Amanda Smith scored one.

The Falcons saw a big game from goalie Caitlin Ryan, who set aside 14 shots on the day, including nine saves on the first half.† Ryan faced 38 shots from the Tars, 31 of which were on cage.

Rollins jumped to an early 4-0 lead with 23:28 remaining before the break, but saw their advantage cut in half with two Pfeiffer goals, both assisted by Tory Binder, to pull to within two with 13:09 on the clock.

The Tars hit their first half stride, scoring five goals from five different players in just two and a half minutes, sprinting out to a seven goal lead with 7:16 to go before the break.† But PU answered right back with four straight tallies of their own to close the gap to three with a score of 9-6 and 2:55 to go.

Showell netted a goal off of a Connelly feed just 12 seconds later to pull Rollins ahead 10-6, but two straight crease rolls from Allie Gamble pulled the Falcons to within two as the teams entered into the half with a score of 10-8.

Tyszko ignited the Tars at the start of the second half, scoring an†unassisted goal 46 seconds in.† The two south region foes battled back and forth over the ensuing eight minutes, as each team scored two apiece to set the score at 13-10 with 19:54 on the clock.

Rollins was handed two quick yellow cards two minutes later, allowing Pfeiffer to rattle off their six goal run over the following 10 minutes of play to pull ahead to a 16-13 lead with 7:42 to go.

But the Tars were not about to back down, netting the final four goals of the contest, including two from Tyszko, to secure the victory.

Pfeiffer returns home on Tuesday afternoon for a 4:00 p.m. matchup with visiting Southern New Hampshire.
