Softball Battles Back for Split with Francis Marion

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Francis Marion and Pfeiffer University’s split a non-conference softball doubleheader on Thursday afternoon at Jack Ingram Field. The Patriots scored nine unanswered in a 9-1 win before Pfeiffer bounced back for a 2-1 win in the nightcap. The Lady Falcons move to 15-25 on the season while Francis Marion improves to 28-11.
GAME ONE: Francis Marion 9, Pfeiffer 1 (5)
Pfeiffer struck first in the opener with their lone coming in via base hit by Sarah Waylock (Cary, IL). Amber Johnson (Spokane, WA) scored on the play due to a Patriot throwing error to third. The Patriots responded with three in the second to start their nine unanswered as Meghan Heiser (Sacramento, CA) scored Michaela Wolf (Littleton, CO) with a single to right. Jessica Birchmeier (Port Richey, FL) plated later on a wild pitch while Olivia Ferguson (Roanoke, VA) picked up the other RBI with a double to left.
Two more Francis Marion runs came around in the third on a pair of Lady Falcon errors as Wolf again scored on an outfield throwing error in front of Jessica Hogan (Asheboro, NC) plating on a dropped pop up. Ashley Jaramillo (Canyon Country, CA) started the four-run fourth with a two-run double to center before Birchmeier and Heiser finished off Pfeiffer with RBI later in the frame.
GAME TWO: Pfeiffer 2, Francis Marion 1
Mikaela Strickland (Bonifay, FL) put the Lady Falcons on the board in the second of game two with a two-out RBI single to right. Heather Nobles (Angier, NC) gave the Lady Falcons their eventual game-winning run with her eighth home run of the season on an opposite field shot to right.
The Patriots lone run came in the top of the fifth as Hogan led off with a triple to center and scoring immediately on Birchmeier sacrifice-fly to left. Francis Marion had the bases-loaded with one out in the seventh but had an interference call between second and third followed by a pop out to second to end the game.
Pfeiffer returns to action on Saturday afternoon traveling to Anderson for a Conference Carolinas make-up doubleheader. First pitch in game one is slated for 2:00 p.m.
