LAURINBURG, N.C. - After St. Andrews Presbyterian College tied the game in the sixth, visiting Pfeiffer University scored the game’s final eight runs in the last three innings to pull away for a 12-4 Conference Carolinas baseball victory Saturday afternoon at Clark Field. The Falcons (21-22 Overall, 12-9 Conf.) hit three home runs and scored 12 runs on 14 total hits. Junior Eric Shoemaker (Hunterville, N.C.) highlighted the late scoring outburst by Pfeiffer with a three-run homer in the seventh. Shoemaker and senior Will Davis (New London, N.C.), who hit a solo shot in the fifth, led the Falcons with three RBI apiece.
Freshman Daniel Oliver (Plymouth, N.C.) had a huge game for the Knights (9-30-1, 6-14), ripping four extra-base hits in his four plate appearances including a solo home run and a trio of doubles. Oliver finished with two runs scored and one RBI.
Davis had a team-high four hits and three runs scored to go along with his three runs batted in for the Falcons. Sophomore Preston Lyon (Gastonia, N.C.) added three singles. Senior Zack Pou (Stanley, N.C.) ripped a double in the seventh inning to extend his lengthy hit steak to 35 games.
Senior Myles Pearl (High Point, N.C.) provided Pfeiffer with an instant lead, cracking the first pitch of the game over the right field fence. Pearl leads the Falcons with 14 home runs while Shoemaker and Davis now have 11 and four homers, respectively, on the season.
Pfeiffer scored twice in the first and one in the third to take an early 3-0 lead before St. Andrews got on the board in the fourth when senior Josh Axelsen (St. Charles, Ill.) smacked his second home run in as many days. Axelsen’s fifth home run of the season increased his team-high RBI total to 37. The Knights got a second run in the frame when Oliver hit a double and then scored on a single by freshman Jeff Brothers (East Sparta, Ohio).
Axelsen extended his current hit streak to seven games and has produced 10 runs in that stretch.
The two ball clubs traded lone runs in the fifth -- with Davis hitting his solo rocket in the top half and senior Samson Williams (Wilmington, N.C.) hitting a sacrifice fly in the home half -- before St. Andrews tied the score for the only time at 4-4 on Oliver’s solo shot in the sixth.
The Falcons quickly regained the lead for good with four runs in the seventh that included Shoemaker’s three-run round tripper. Pfeiffer added an insurance run in the eighth before pulling away with three more runs in the ninth.
Junior middle reliever Ethan Marsh (Asheboro, N.C.) picked up his first win of the season. Marsh (1-0) only allowed one hit over 2 2/3 innings of work while being in the game when Pfeiffer regained the lead. Freshman starter Kyle Tate (Gastonia, N.C.) took the loss for the Knights even though he had a game-high six strikeouts.
St. Andrews will make its second trip to No. 10 USC Aiken (Aiken, S.C.) in as many weeks on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. Pfeiffer will play a neutral site game against Armstrong Atlantic State University at UNC Pembroke (Pembroke, N.C.) on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
