MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Saturday proved a trying time for Team Pfeiffer Cycling coming in third place for the day. Poor road conditions, 15% climbs, steep downhill's, a poorly marked and manned course with rocky, dirt road sections took its eventual toll. Pfeiffer bounced back on Sunday to maintain its overall lead in the ACCC.
Justin Beard was able to hold on for third in the men's A while Michael Robinson didn’t finish due to a flat tire on the first rough section. Michael Brown controlled much of the race until the uphill portions and finished in 11th. On the women’s side, Stephanie Bunnett and KC Fee took 2nd in the women’s B's and women’s A's while Paige Beard took 1st in the C. Eric Sekercan fought a long, hard 300 meter sprint to hold off for a men's D 1st place finish.
Easter Sunday proved the Falcons were still in the game as the objective became to hold off as many D2 schools as possible. Sekercan started the day by setting the record straight as far as points were concerned. After dropping ASU, Sekercan went on to take his second first place of the weekend after a motivated exchange with ASU.
Bunnett was able to hold on for another second place in the women's B field while Brown was in the men's B break for the entire race and finished seventh, allowing only one D2 school ahead. Knowing points were needed, Fee dominated the women's A race by taking the top spot. Pfeiffer was then well on its way to stay in the lead.
Beard was taken out in a crash during her race despite being very aggressive early until the major mishap. A Virginia racer lost control of her bike and took Beard down. Beard, although in pain from a great deal of road rash on her hands, knees, hip and leg, took off to finish her race. Her first place points aided in off-setting any lost points to Duke or ASU earlier in the day.
The men's main event began with Beard and Robinson in the men's A field. Beard was clearly in control of most of the race by constantly forcing the pace and stringing the field out. NCSU and VT worked together to try and shut Beard down until Beard took a strong and much needed second place. Robinson finished 13th.
Pfeiffer Cycling still leads the D2 ACCC by 60 points going into the final regular race series at West Virginia this weekend. The ACCC Championship are in Blacksburg, VA held by VT, April 17th and 18th.
