Results vs. Coker (2009-03-21 12:00:00)
March 21, 2009Hartsville, SC – If you were at the field on Saturday afternoon for the first two games of the Conference Carolinas series between Pfeiffer and Coker you would have seen two completely different types of games. Game one was an offensive battle that had the Cobras coming out on top 14-13, while game two was a pitchers duel that went extra innings and had Pfeiffer winning 2-1 in nine innings.
After the day, Pfeiffer moves to 19-8-1 overall and 5-3 in the conference, while Coker is 15-13 overall, and 3-6 in the conference.
Game one saw Coker jump on top 4-0 after the first by scoring three unearned runs off Chris Miller (Atlantic Beach, FL) who started for the Falcons.
Pfeiffer quickly answered with three in the top of the second. After a walk to Brandon Rouse (Kinston, NC) to lead off the inning, Jesse Dunn (Easley, SC) added a single and they were followed by a sac fly from Ethan Marsh (Asheboro, NC). The inning was highlight by a two-run triple by Preston Lyon (Gastonia, NC).
Pfeiffer added three more runs in the fifth to grab the lead at 6-4. Eric Shoemaker (Huntersville, NC), Zach Pou (Stanley, NC), and Will Davis (New London, NC) reached base to start the inning. They were followed by a sac fly by Rouse. Marsh then added a two-run single to cap off the inning.
The drama started in the top of the ninth after Coker had regained the lead at 10-7 with Pfeiffer coming to the plate. After Justin Collier (Laurens, SC) got an out to start the inning; Pou, Davis, Rouse, and Dunn all added hits and after a sac fly by Marsh the game was tied. Then with the bases loaded and two outs Josh Strickland (Liberty, NC) doubled to right center to clear the bases and give the Falcons a 13-10 lead.
Coker cut the lead to 13-11 and loaded the bases. Brinley Griffin (Port Saint John, FL) walked to cut the lead to 13-12. After two strikes to Karl Ankerson (Mt. Pleasant, SC), a wild pitch that scooted into the dugout scored the tying and winning runs.
Coker's Jonathan Gainey (Hartsville, SC) (1-1) picked up the win, throwing two-thirds of an inning, allowing two runs on one hit, while Nick Fogleman (6-1) took the loss, tossing a third of an inning in relief, allowing one run.
Ankersen led the Cobras, going 3-for-6 with four RBIs and a run scored, while Kyle Walker (Centralia, IL) went 4-for-6 with an RBI. Brian Luchsinger (Farmingville, NY) had a pair of hits, two RBIs and two runs scored, with Taylor Evans (Arvada, CO) picking up two hits including a double.
For Pfeiffer, Ethan Marsh was 1-for-2 with a game high four RBIs, while Rouse was 1-for-2 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Dunn finished the game 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and Davis was 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Lyon was 1-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs and Strickland had a double with three RBIs.
A one-out RBI double in the top of the ninth by Pfeiffer's Marsh, broke a 1-1 tie and gave the Falcons a 2-1 win in extra innings of game two. Coker and Pfeiffer were deadlocked at one apiece after seven innings, sending the game to extra innings.
Coker got on the board first with a run in the first, but the Falcons Jonathan McDaniel (Mocksville, NC) (3-3) held Coker scoreless for the next eight innings, as he earned the complete game win, throwing nine innings, allowing just one run on five hits with 10 strikeouts.
Tom Oschip (Concord, OH) (2-1) took the loss, tossing 1.2 innings of relief, allowing one run on one hit.
For Pfeiffer, Marsh was 1-for-2 with an RBI double and Mike Green (Brandon, FL) was 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Griffin was 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Kyle Walker (Centrailia, EL) was 1-for-3 with an RBI to lead Coker.
Coker and Pfeiffer will complete their three game series on Sunday, as they take to the field at 1:00 p.m.
