April 16, 2010
HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Pfeiffer University survived day one and earned the right to play in day two of the 2010 Conference Carolinas softball tournament held in Hartsville’s Byerly Park. The Lady Falcons suffered a heartbreaking 4-2, eight-inning loss to #2 Erskine on a walk-off homer by Kelly Davis, before bouncing back to send #5 Mount Olive packing with a 5-2 win in the second elimination game of the day. Pfeiffer improves to 20-28 overall and will have a rematch with Erskine in another elimination contest at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.
GAME FOUR: Erskine 4, Pfeiffer 2 (8)
Pfeiffer put their pair of runs on the board in the second taking advantage of a Lady Fleet error. With the bases loaded, Amber Johnson reached on a throwing error at shortstop that allowed Mariah Chalk and Melanie Conklin to tally the two unearned runs.
Erskine got one run back in the third as Kayla Vinson’s RBI-single drove home Jocelyn Smith. The unearned and game-tying run came in the fifth as Larissa Shannon blooped a single down the right field line that plated Morgan Purcell.
In the eighth, a one-out hit by pitch to Purcell put her aboard for Davis walk-off blast to left-center field. Pfeiffer had a golden opportunity in the first frame putting Kylee Nichols and Johnson on to start the inning, but could not capitalize with any runs. Johnson and Sam Taylor had a pair of hits in the opening round loss.
GAME SIX: Pfeiffer 5, Mount Olive 2
Facing elimination, the Lady Falcons came out with a four-spot in the first to set the tone. Again, Nichols and Johnson got aboard with a walk and a bunt for base hit. Nichols advanced to third on a throwing error by the Trojans backstop. Chalk picked up the first RBI with a base hit to right. Sarah Waylock then followed with a bunt that brought home Johnson.
With Chalk at second, Heather Nobles picked up a base hit to left and advanced to second on a delayed steal before the next pitch. The throw to second to throw out Nobles ended up at the base of the centerfield fence allowing Chalk and Nobles to scamper home with the two bonus runs.
After a two-run homer by Mount Olive in the fifth, Pfeiffer tacked on an insurance run in the seventh with another RBI from Waylock courtesy of a base hit to left. An inning before with another shot at insurance, Taylor led off with a triple down the right-field line, but was stranded at third as the inning came to an end. Melanie Conklin earned the win in the circle going all seven giving up the two-run homer with four hits and six strikeouts.
