JEFFERSON CITY, T.N. — The 20th-ranked Carson-Newman men’s soccer team jumped out to a 3-nil first-half lead en route to defeating Pfeiffer, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon at McCown Field. With the win, the Eagles improve to 1-1 on the season, while Pfeiffer drops to 0-2.
C-N kept the pressure on the Falcons and held a 15-9 advantage in shots, including nine shots on goal.
The Eagles got some help early on from Pfeiffer, as Ben Backstrom (Knoxville, Tenn.) sent a cross pass in front of the net and a Falcon defender blocked it into the goal for an own goal, giving C-N a 1-nil lead in the 16th minute.
C-N added to its lead in the 26th minute. Adam Thomas (Morristown, Tenn.) gathered a short pass from Anthony Chiappetta (Morristown, Tenn.) in front of the goal and knocked it in to give the Eagles a two-goal cushion.
Chiappetta got into the scoring action later in the half as he placed the ball in the back of the net on a pass from Robert Hill (Middlesbrough, England) in the 41st minute to give C-N a 3-nil lead heading into the locker room.
Pfeiffer’s Alex Landim (Brockton, Mass.) scored the Falcons’ lone goal as he finished off a cross from Johannes Tisell (Moindal, Sweden) in the 64th minute.
C-N goalkeeper Michael Alley (Kingsport, Tenn.) had a solid effort on the night, giving up one goal and tallying three saves. Pfeiffer’s Alex Moreno (Huntersville, N.C.) gave up three goals and recorded six saves in the loss.
The Falcons will return to action on Friday heading to UNC-Pembroke for a 5:00 p.m. start time.
