Barton Rallies from Opening Set Loss to Setback Women's Volleyball 3-1

Box Score

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Barton College put three players in double-figure kills coming back for a 3-1 road victory over host Pfeiffer University in Conference Carolinas women’s volleyball action on Tuesday night inside the Merner Gym. The Lady Bulldogs, now 1-4 overall, 1-1 in league play, hit .444 in the second set to start the rally. The Lady Falcons remain winless at 0-5, 0-1.

Set one went back and forth all the way to the end as Pfeiffer’s Kristina Mordini (Freeport, IL) and Barton’s Kati Wood (Pasadena, MD) each traded game-tying kills midway through the opening set. Melissa Ritter (Wescosville, PA) kept the Lady Bulldogs within three late, but Mordini, along with Kim Amerell (Lynchburg, VA) and Milana Mervosh (Roebuck, SC) helped finish off the initial stanza with kills for a 25-23 victory.

Pfeiffer raced out to a 3-0 lead in set two on another kill by Amerell and Mordini forcing a Barton timeout, but the visitors would take over from there en route to the seven-point win. The Lady Bulldogs went on an eight-point run halfway through the set led by three kills apiece from Ritter and Chancey Sebranek (Garden City, KS). Ritter concluded the set and evened the match with a pair of kills in a three-play span.

Set three, like set one, went down to the wire as both teams traded the lead into the 20’s. Abbie Ovbey (Mt. Gilead, NC) had a pair of kills to give Pfeiffer a 14-8 lead, capping a six-point run, before Barton jumped out on 10-4 stretch, knotting the contest at 17 apiece on a Carly Love (Oxford, NC) ace. The Lady Falcons led 21-20 on a service ace by Mordini, but Meagan Parrott (Oxford, NC) gave the visitors a 2-1 match advantage with a pair of kills over the final four plays.

Barton created a five-point separation on three Lady Falcon attack errors for a 16-9 set midway through the third set. As Pfeiffer attempted a rally from two Jordan O’Bryant (Reidsville, NC) kills, Wood and Ritter would each throw down a pair of late kills themselves to clinch the match.

Final numbers saw Ritter and Parrott each lead the way with a match-high 16 kills. Wood followed closely with 14 while Love contributed with a match-high 49 assists. Mordini paced Pfeiffer with 13 kills while Colleen Wands (Apex, NC) had 39 helpers. Each team committed over 40 errors in the match while Barton out-dug Pfeiffer 67-59.

The Lady Falcons will return home this Friday and Saturday hosting the 2010 Lucky Dog Invitational. Pfeiffer will start the tournament action at 5:00 p.m. on Friday with Queens in a Conference Carolinas match. North Greenville and Montreat will follow at 7:00 p.m.
