Women's Volleyball Sees Lead Slip Away in Five-Set Loss to Queens
September 10, 2010
MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Down two sets to one, Queens University rallied back to score a 3-2 (25-20, 17-25, 21-25, 25-23, 15-12) victory over Pfeiffer University in Conference Carolinas women’s volleyball action on Friday night in the Merner Gym. The Royals improve to 6-0 on the year, 2-0 in league play while the Lady Falcons fall to 0-6, 0-2.
Queens hit an impressive .524 in the first set with just one attack error in 21 attempts. Ashlyn Dibrell (Arlington, TX) and Alexa Sparell (Winter Park, FL) each had four kills in the opener en route to the five point win. After a service ace by Pfeiffer’s Colleen Wands (Apex, NC) knotted the contest at 11 apiece, Keri Kemp (Lake Mary, FL) along with Sparell, threw down kills to give Queens the final advantage. Dibrell had three of her four kills in a four-plan span late for the 1-0 match lead.
Queens would hit in the negatives over the next two sets allowing the Lady Falcons to grab their one-set lead. Late in set two, Pfeiffer would nail down the win on five-straight points using three errors from the Royals and a kill by Ashlee Panzer (Mt. Gilead, NC) and Milana Mervosh (Roebuck, SC). Panzer eventually delivered the final kill to square the match at one.
In the middle set, both teams traded the lead back and forth until a kill by Avery Moore (Arlington, TX) and penalty point awarded to the Royals gave the visitors a 19-18 lead. Pfeiffer rallied right back to score four-in-a-row on kills by Kim Amerell (Lynchburg, VA) and Jordan O’Bryant (Reidsville, NC) storming back with three Queens errors for game point. Amerell threw down the sets final kill for the 2-1 match advantage.
The Royals grabbed the fourth set lead on four-straight points going from down two to up one on a pair of service aces by Dibrell. Trailing 23-20 after a Queens timeout, O’Bryant and Kristina Mordini (Freeport, IL) would each tally a kill while a Royals attack error suddenly tied the set at 23-23. Another Dibrell kill and attack miscue by the Lady Falcons ended up forcing the fifth and final set.
O’Bryant added two more kills early in the decisive set keeping the host Lady Falcons in the contest. Three Pfeiffer errors in a five-play stretch put Queens up four before back-to-back Royals mistakes got the Lady Falcons to within a pair. After another kill by Kemp and Sparell, Brittney Barren (Ham Lake, MN) and the final attack error by the Lady Falcons gave the Royals a 3-2 victory.
Amerell led all offensively with a match-high dozen kills. Mervosh was the only other player in double-figures with 10. Sparell, along with Ashley Winters (Fredericktown, OH) each had nine for the visitors. Pfeiffer did out block the Royals 8-3.
Both teams return to the Merner Gym for the final day of the 2010 Lucky Dog Invitational each taking on North Greenville and Montreat at 12:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.
