Women's Soccer Drops League Opener and Third-Straight in 2-1 Loss at Queens

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Queens University used a goal in each half securing a 2-1 Conference Carolinas women’s soccer win over Pfeiffer University on Thursday night. The victory pushes the Royals to 2-3 overall, 2-0 in league play, while the Lady Falcons lose their third-straight falling to 2-3, 0-1.
Queens started the scoring in the 28th minute as the initial shot by Katherine Carr was knocked down by the Pfeiffer defense. The rebound from Carr’s shot traveled over to Kelsey Howard who found Sami Striano for the 1-0 lead.
After the intermission, the Lady Falcons got on the board with Alyssa Wombwell’s second goal of the season as Erin Menzel (Wilson, NC) sent a long pass to Wombwell who headed home the equalizer in the 49th minute.
The Royals notched the game-winner in the 57th minute as Kristen Wright found Amanda Wright in front of the cage. Wombwell had the game’s final shot with just under 90 seconds left, but had Megan Hirschy stand in her way making the save.
Hirschy made three saves on the night for the hosts. Pfeiffer managed 10 shots in the contest, four on net. Jamie Alcala (Fredericksburg, VA) turned aside four Royals shots in the loss.
The Lady Falcons will get back into league play on Saturday hosting Erskine for a pivotal matchup. Kickoff on Saturday is set for 3:00 p.m.
