September 18, 2010
MISENHEIMER, N.C. Ė Pfeiffer University used a pair of first half goals to score their first win of the season with a 2-1 victory over Erskine College in Conference Carolinas menís soccer action on Saturday afternoon at N.E. Lefko Field. An own goal proved to be the difference as the Falcons advance to 1-3-1 overall, 1-1 in league play. The Flying Fleet loss drops them to 2-2, 0-1.
Pfeiffer struck quickly in the 12th minute as Fahret Salihovic (Charlotte, NC) sent a corner kick cross to the head of Alex Landim (Brockton, MA) who found the back of the net for a 1-0 Falcon lead. Three and a half minutes later, Asher Quave-Robinson (Columbia, SC) attempted to send a cross over to Landim in the box that deflected off a sliding Erskine defender and into the cage for a 2-0.
Matt Sluga (Greer, SC) put the Flying Fleet on the board just 1:09 into the second half. After the initial shot by Ben Godfrey (Rutherfordton, NC) was saved by Falcon keeper Alex Moreno (Huntersville, NC), the rebound clanked off the crossbar and down into a pile of players where Sluga tapped it in to cut the deficit in half.
Moreno made six saves in net as the Falcons played a majority of the second half down a man after a red card. Erskine was issued a red card with just seconds left in the contest as a physical match took place from start to finish.
Pfeiffer steps out of conference play on Wednesday to host Newberry at N.E. Lefko Field. Match time is set for 4:00 p.m. with live stats being available through www.gofalconsports.com.
