HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker volleyball team lost a heartbreaker of a match on Friday night, 3-2 to Pfeiffer University. The Cobras and the Falcons fought hard from the first serve to the last, but it was Pfeiffer the came out on top in the end. The Lady Falcons improves to 4-12 overall, 4-5 in league play behind setter Colleen Wands’ (Apex, N.C.) match-high 53 assists.
The Falcons jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a 25-20 win in the first set, but Coker quickly evened the sets at one apiece with a 25-21 win in the second set. Pfeiffer won the third set with a 25-18 victory; the largest point differential of the match. Coker was not ready to concede as they entered the fourth set and thanks to some gutsy performances, the Cobras picked up the 28-26 win to send the match to a fifth and final set.
Finally, after a back and forth fifth set, the Falcons took home the match victory with a 15-13 fifth set win. Mindy Morris (Beaufort, S.C.) and Katie McElveen (Hartsville, S.C.) paced the Cobras with a pair of double-double performances. Morris had 10 kills with 19 digs and McElveen had 11 kills and 12 digs. Cynallyhia Indriago (Columbia, S.C.) just missed a double-double with nine kills and 14 digs, while Molly Bookhart (Orangeburg, S.C.) had 37 assists and 11 digs. Brittany Bass (Bethune, S.C.) added 13 digs in the match.
For Pfeiffer, Kristina Mordini (Freeport, I.L.) had a match high 23 kills and seven digs, while Kaci Markham (Asheboro, N.C.) had a match high 27 digs. Caroline Lambeth (Asheboro, N.C.) added a career-high 21 digs of her own and Milana Mervosh (Roebuck, S.C.) had 12 kills and two aces.
Pfeiffer returns to action next Friday as the school’s fall break winds down. The Lady Falcons will head to Barton and Mount Olive for a weekend series beginning at 6:30 p.m. Friday and 2:00 p.m. Saturday.
