Women's Volleyball Picks Up Fifth-Straight Win in 3-0 Sweep over Limestone
October 20, 2010
#16 Kim Amerell
MISENHEIMER, N.C. – The Pfeiffer University women’s volleyball team scored its fifth-straight win, eight of their last nine in league play, with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-23) sweep over Limestone in Conference Carolinas women’s volleyball action on Wednesday night at Merner Gym. The Lady Falcons scored the very first point of the match and never relinquished the lead improving to 8-12 overall, 8-5 inside conference play while the Lady Saints fall to 5-16, 3-10.
Pfeiffer jumped out early in set one with one of Kim Amerell’s 10 kills on the night for an 8-3 lead and a Limestone timeout. A Jordan Preville (East Lansing, MI) kill and service ace from Rebecca Kerrison (Charleston, SC) brought the Lady Saints back to within one at 14-13 but a quick 4-0 Pfeiffer run led by a pair of Abbie Ovbey (Mt. Gilead, NC) kills forced Limestone to use their second timeout. Again, Limestone mounted a late rally on a Danielle Seibert (Naperville, IL) kill, but after a Pfeiffer stoppage in play, a final Kristina Mordini (Freeport, IL) kill ended set one 25-23.
Another Amerell kill at 9-6 helped the Lady Falcons to a quick start in set two before back-to-back Danielle Enrico (Jupiter, FL) kills again brought the Lady Saints within two at 12-10. From there, Pfeiffer would use four Limestone errors, an ace from libero Kaci Markham (Asheboro, NC) and kills from both Amerell and Mordini for a seven-point run. Two more throw downs by Mordini and the final blow from Jordan O'Bryant (Reidsville, NC) would put the hosts up 2-0 in the match.
At 12-7 of set three, O’Bryant would register another one of her seven kills on the night for a five-point Lady Falcon advantage in front of another Limestone timeout. Outside hitter Kassi Boedeker (Phoenix, AZ) would put down three kills in a five-play stretch cutting the Pfeiffer advantage to 24-23, but Amerell would tally her final kill of the night to end the match.
Boedeker led all with 15 kills on the night as the only Lady Saint to come up with double-digit kills. Mordini paced Pfeiffer with 11, one better than Amerell’s 10. Amerell hit a career best .409 in the match. The Lady Falcon defense again stood tough with 14 more digs than Limestone finishing with 49.
Pfeiffer will now step out of conference play to host a tri-match on Saturday afternoon inside the Merner Gym. Pfeiffer will take on Lenoir-Rhyne at 12:00 p.m. and Virginia Union at 4:00 p.m. while those two schools will meet in the middle at 2:00 p.m.
