Women's Soccer Breaks Two School Records in 1-0 Shutout of Limestone; Advance to Conf. Semis on Thursday
November 1, 2010
#6 Sheena Regan and #21 Lindsay Godwin
MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Pfeiffer University’s Sheena Regan (Chesapeake, VA) tallied the match’s only goal as the third-seeded Lady Falcons shutout sixth-seeded Limestone 1-0 in the first round of the 2010 Conference Carolinas women’s soccer tournament on Monday afternoon. In addition to the win, Pfeiffer broke a pair of school records registering their sixth-straight shutout of an opponent while setting a new high for not allowing a goal in the last 617 minutes and 20 seconds of play. Pfeiffer improves to 12-5-1 overall advancing to face the winner of Erskine/Queens. Limestone ends its season at 7-8-2.
The physical rivalry continued between the two teams all afternoon long contributing to the scoreless soccer in over 80 of the match’s 90 minutes. Pfeiffer finally broke through in the 81st minute with a scramble in front of the goal mouth. After an initial shot by Tish Patino (East Bend, NC) was knocked down by Limestone keeper Kristen Alderin-Fleagle (Kernersville, NC), Regan was right there to push the loose ball just inside the right post for the game’s only score.
Each side fired 10 shots on the afternoon with the Lady Falcons leading 5-4 with shots on goal. Pfeiffer also held the slight edge in corner kicks 5-4. Amanda Wemple (Hayden Lake, ID) made four saves in the win improving to 5-0-1 in net.
Pfeiffer now moves onto to semifinals Thursday to face Monday night’s winner of #7 Erskine at #2 Queens. If the Lady Fleet pull off the upset, the Lady Falcons would host at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday. If Queens holds on to their higher seed, the Royals would host Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
