November 20, 2010
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Despite a double-double from Devona Knight with 12 points and 11 rebounds, Pfeiffer University fell to host Johnson C. Smith 66-64 in non-conference women’s basketball action at day one of the Queen City Classic. Three late free throws by Brittany Cox gave the Falcons a shot at the end, but a final heave by Domonique China fell short as the Golden Bulls survived improving to 3-0. The loss for the Lady Falcons sends them to 1-2.
Johnson C. Smith closed out the first half with a five-point run to carry a 34-28 lead into the locker room. Pfeiffer played catch up for most of the second half until a China layup tied the contest at 59 with 4:22 to play. After a brief two point Pfeiffer lead thanks to a Surratt jumper, a 7-0 JCSU run created the game’s final bit of separation.
Pfeiffer placed three others in double-figures besides Knight’s 12. Cox led the way with a game-high 16, followed by China’s 13 and Olivia Surratt’s 11. For the hosts, Shavonda Price and Laqwesha Gamble each had 15 while Shakeena Cunningham had 10.
Team stats saw Johnson C. Smith lead in two of the three categories. The Golden Bulls shot 43% from the field and 72% from the charity stripe to lead those numbers. The Lady Falcons drained eight three-pointers shooting 33% to lead that category.
Pfeiffer will wrap up action in the Queen City Classic on Sunday afternoon taking on Livingstone in Charlotte at 2:00 p.m.
