Walk-Off Walk Sends Baseball to 5-4 Win over Brevard in 11
February 6, 2011
SALISBURY, N.C. – A bases loaded walk by Tyler Smith in the bottom of the eleventh inning brought home Preston Lyon with the game winning run as Pfeiffer University claimed a 5-4 extra inning win over Brevard College on Sunday afternoon at Newman Park. The Falcons improve to 2-1 on the year while the Tornados drop their season opener.
The Pfeiffer eleventh started with Lyon doubling down the right field line. After a Jon Gray sacrifice bunt moved Lyon over to third, both Aarin Sharpe and Eric Shoemaker were intentionally walked to set up a potential force at home. Smith then followed with a 3-2 walk to first forcing home the winning run.
Pfeiffer struck first in the third on a Jacob Yates two-run double to the gap in left-center. Smith and Kevin Price both scored on Yates’ two-bagger starting the frame with back-to-back singles. Yates later scored in the inning as Preston Lyon reached on a two-out error committed at third.
Both teams traded runs in the fourth as Brevard used a RBI-groundout from Randy O’Dell while the Falcons used a sacrifice-fly off the bat of Price to take a 4-1 lead through four. The second Pfeiffer error of the day led to the Tornados tally in the fifth while Steele Myers delivered a clutch two-run blast in the top of the seventh to tie the game at four, eventually sending the contest into free baseball.
The Falcons return to action on Tuesday and Wednesday with a home and home series against #23 Catawba. Tuesday’s contest will take place at Pfeiffer’s Joe Ferebee Field at 2:00 p.m. while Wednesday’s 3:00 p.m. tilt happens back at Newman Park.
