February 9, 2011
SALISBURY, N.C. - Freshman John Tuttle (Kannapolis, NC) tossed seven strong innings and Catawba scored early to take a 6-2 win over visiting Pfeiffer at Newman Park on Thursday afternoon. The Catawba Indians improved their record to 3-2, while Pfeiffer falls to 3-2.
The Indians started quickly, scoring four times in the first. Ryan Bostian (Kannapolis, NC) started it with a one-out triple and scored on a single by Josh Hohn (Greensboro, NC) to tie the game at 1-1. A batter later, freshman Chris Dula (Troutman, NC) connected on a three-run homer to left field to give the Indians a 4-1 lead.
In the second, Catawba added two more runs with the help of some costly Pfeiffer mistakes, including an error and wild pitch. Bostian drove home one run on a sacrifice fly and the other run scored on the wild pitch. Bostian, along with Brett Underwood (Greensboro, NC) and Blake Houston (Mt. Ulla, NC), had two hits for the Indians.
Tuttle kept Pfeiffer in check for seven innings. He allowed only two runs off three hits and struck out four. Nick Lomascolo (Mooresville, NC) and Austin Moyer (Greensboro, NC) pitched the final two shutout frames.
Jacob Yates (Blairs, VA) and Hunter Boehme (Winston-Salem, NC) both went 1-for-3 and scored for the Falcons. Jon Gray (Granite Falls, NC) had a sacrifice fly in the first to give Pfeiffer a brief 1-0 lead and Preston Lyons (Gastonia, NC) drove home Boehme on a ground out in the sixth. Ethan Marsh (Winterville, NC) took the loss for the Falcons, giving up seven hits and six runs over five innings.
Pfeiffer returns home this Saturday and Sunday to host Francis Marion out of the Peach Belt Conference at 1:00 p.m. both days.
