February 14, 2011
MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Three players posted double-doubles on Monday night, a part of six Falcons in double figures, as Pfeiffer University registered an 86-76 victory over St. Andrews in Conference Carolinas men’s basketball inside the Merner Gym. The win clinches a playoff spot for the Falcons in the upcoming tournament as they improve to 10-12 overall, 8-6 in league play. The loss sends the Knights down to 12-11, 8-7.
Both teams saw a tied contest eight times in the first half as Chris Woods (Thomasville, NC) knocked down a pair of free throws to give the Falcons a 30-29 lead with 7:09 remaining in the first. After Pfeiffer went up by as much as nine on jumpers from Eli Gillis (Largo, FL) and Elijah Matthews (Clinton, MD), St. Andrews closed out the first half on a 10-2 run as Pfeiffer held a slim 43-42 advantage at recess.
The Knights carried that first half momentum into the second as Ryan Streater (Charlotte, NC) gave the visitors a nine point, 54-45 lead just four minutes in. Pfeiffer trimmed the lead down to one on a three from Yuki Yamaguchi (Tokyo, JAPAN) before re-taking the lead on another triple from Josh Humphrey (Matthews, NC) with 13:35 remaining. Both triples were a part of a Falcon 14-0 run to get the lead back out to nine at the halfway point of the second.
A Michael Dunkins (Candor, NC) free throw got the Knights to within one, 67-66 with exactly seven minutes on the board until SAPC grabbed a one point lead on a triple by Chris Sumski (Charlotte, NC) with 4:11 to go. Another 9-0 run by the Falcons quickly sealed the deal as Davon Gilliard (Charleston, SC) sparked the streak with a made free throw, offensive rebound and quick lay in with two minutes left. Late free throws by Gilliard, Matthews and Humphrey gave the Falcons their 10 point cushion.
Woods led the Falcons with 22 points and 14 rebounds while Gilliard scored 15 with 10 boards. Humphrey had the third double-double of the night going with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Yamaguchi concluded with 11 points while Matthews and Gillis each had 10. The Knights were led by Marvin Jackson’s (Gloucester, VA) game high 30 points with 14 boards. Aaron Christian (New Bedford, MA) was the only other Knight in double digits.
Pfeiffer will now begin a three-game road trip beginning on Thursday night at Barton. The Falcons and Bulldogs are set for a 7:30 p.m. tip from Wilson.
