Men's Basketball Deflates Late in 97-80 Loss at Barton

WILSON, N.C. - The inside-outside combination of senior forward L.J. Dunn and junior guard Jaren Haley powered the Barton College Bulldogs to a 97-80 victory Thursday night over visiting Pfeiffer and into sole possession of third place in the Conference Carolinas menís basketball standings. Dunn (Raleigh, N.C.) recorded game-highs of 29 points and 14 rebounds and Haley (Woodbridge, Va.) rained in six 3-pointers for 26 points and added five assists. The surging Bulldogs rose to 15-9 overall and 10-6 in the league with their third straight win. Pfeiffer exited at 10-13 overall and 8-7 in conference play.
Dunn, junior forward Jon Benitez (Gambrills, Md.) and junior forward Jo Jo Velez (Woodbridge, Va.) teamed up to hold league-leading scorer Chris Woods (Thomasville, N.C.) to 15 points and 11 rebounds. Pfeiffer was led by junior guard Davon Gilliard, who had 22 points, thanks to 11-of-14 shooting from the foul line.
Barton was nursing a scant 74-72 lead with 6:30 remaining when Haley recorded a rare four-point play. With just under five minutes left, Haley went wild, swishing three consecutive 3-point bombs from different angles. He followed that spree with a layup for a personal 11-point run that put the Bulldogs in command at 91-78 with 2:06 showing.
The physical affair featured 46 fouls and 67 free-throw attempts. Pfeiffer was 29-of-37 (78.4 percent) from the charity stripe while the Bulldogs were 23-of-30 (76.7 percent). From the field, Barton cashed 32-of-72 shots for 44.4 percent and limited the Falcons to 22-of-62 for 35.5 percent.
Dunn, who sat out the final eight-plus minutes of the first half after picking up his second foul, had 10 points and seven boards at the break. For the game, he finished 9-of-12 from the floor, 11-of-12 from the foul line and dished off two assists.
The Bulldogs also got 14 points, five steals and three assists from sophomore point guard Gerald Boston (Burlington, N.C.) and 13 points, four steals and four assists from sophomore guard Jarrett Jernigan (Virginia Beach, Va.) Barton finished the night with 24 assists, 13 steals and just eight turnovers while benefiting from 16 Pfeiffer turnovers. Junior 6-foot-10 forward Eli Gillis (Franklin, Tenn.) added 14 points for the Falcons, who split the season-series with Barton. Sophomore guard Josh Humphrey (Matthews, N.C.) contributed 10 points and eight boards.
In the first half, Barton trailed 20-19 with 12:14 left, but went on an 11-0 run behind six points from Dunn, a Boston 3-pointer and a layup from Velez. A putback jam by sophomore forward Jon Hart (Mount Olive, N.C.) ignited the run. Pfeiffer finally broke the drought with four foul shots, but then Jernigan caught fire, drilling three straight 3-pointers for a 17-point Barton lead at 41-24 at 7:03.
The Falcons battled back with a 24-9 run to trail just 50-48 at intermission. Gilliard scored eight points for Pfeiffer during their late first-half surge. The game featured four ties and eight lead changes.
