Late Rally Runs Out of Time as Men's Lacrosse Falls 8-6 at Catawba After Slow Start

SALISBURY, N.C. - Seven different players scored goals as Catawba topped visiting Pfeiffer 8-6 in men’s lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon at Shuford Stadium. Freddie Turcio (Guilford, CT/Guilford HS) scored twice to help the Catawba Indians improve to 2-0. The Falcons fell to 1-1. Catawba led 4-0 after a quarter and held a 5-2 edge at the half. After building an 8-2 lead late in the third quarter, the Indians saw Pfeiffer pull within 8-6 in the closing minutes before holding on.
Braden Artem (Acton, Ontario, CANADA/Christ the King) got the Indians started, scoring just 22 seconds into the contest. Turcio’s first goal in the final 30 seconds of the first quarter put Catawba up 4-0. James Shepherd (St. John, New Brunswick) got Pfeiffer on the board at the 6:17 mark of the second quarter and closed the gap to 5-2 with 4:05 before the break.
The Indians struck for three goals to start the second half. Turcio’s final tally put Catawba up 8-2 with 4:07 left in the third quarter. The Falcons scored a pair of goals seven seconds apart in the final 30 seconds to pull within 8-4 entering the final quarter.
Kory Lutes (Orlando, FL) cut the margin to 8-5 at the 13:20 mark, but 10 minutes went off the clock before another tally. Justin Rose (Rochester, NY) was able to trim the deficit to 8-6 with 3:06 remaining, but Michael Pecchia (Coquitlum, BC, CANADA/Heritage Woods) posted two saves in the final minute and a half to help preserve the win for the Indians.
Pecchia finished with 15 saves on the day with his counterpart Hayden Kirk (Farmingdale, NY) had seven stops in goal for the Falcons. Marty Tuohy (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth HS) joined Turcio with two points for Catawba as he had a goal and an assist. Shepherd’s two goals was the only two-point day for Pfeiffer.
Pfeiffer held a 45-25 edge in shots, including a 16-1 margin in the final quarter. The Falcons also scooped up 42 ground balls to 29 for Catawba. The Indians went 10-of-18 on face-offs with Casey Chinn (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) winning 9-of-16. The Indians also scored the lone man-up goal in six tries, while Pfeiffer had none on five attempts.
