March 1, 2011
HIGH POINT, N.C. - For the first time in school history, Pfeiffer University’s Melanie Conklin (Wellington, OH) has been selected as the NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week during week number four in the 2011 season. The junior put together a stellar week at the plate leading the Lady Falcons to a 5-3 week, 2-0 in league play as Pfeiffer stands alone at 4-0 atop the Conference Carolinas standings while throwing a perfect game on Saturday.
Starting the week at UNC-Pembroke, Conklin went 3-for-6 in the DH spot with a double and run scored. Conklin revved up her week Friday going 4-for-7 at Johnson C. Smith hitting for the cycle, combining both games with four RBI and five runs scored. The junior went 2-for-4 in the opener followed by three hits in four plate appearances in the nightcap. In the league twin bill against St. Andrews, Conklin put together a 5-for-7 afternoon with two homers, two doubles, six RBI and four runs scored. During her three hits in game one, she also managed to throw a perfect game with 18-up, 18-down in the 9-0, six-inning win. Wrapping up the eight games in six days, Conklin put together another hit with three walks in a split at Brevard. Conklin also tallied three more runs, and two more stolen bases after swiping bags at UNC-Pembroke and JC Smith. In total, Conklin hit .520 with three dingers and 10 RBI this week with 13 runs scored.
Grabbing pitcher of the week honors was well-deserved as Conklin tossed 17.2 innings in the circle this week that includes 20 strikeouts and a perfect game thrown against league-foe St. Andrews. In her first six inning start at UNC-Pembroke, Conklin allowed two unearned runs with five hits and seven strikeouts in the tough-luck loss. The junior hurler followed that up with an 18-up, 18-down perfecto with 10 strikeouts against St. Andrews in game one during an 8-0, six-inning win for the Lady Falcons. Pitching in both games at Brevard on Sunday, Conklin tossed 1.2 frames in relief with a pair of strikeouts scoring the win in eight. Starting game two, Conklin took a no-decision after one troubled inning allowing four runs on seven hits for her only rough spot of the weekend. Overall, she leads the Lady Falcon softball with a slim 1.83 ERA allowing just nine earned runs with 36 strikeouts on the season.
Pfeiffer is currently 9-9 overall and 4-0 in the conference after a Tuesday afternoon sweep on Fayetteville State.
