Shepherd Scores Seven Times as Men's Lacrosse Rolls St. Andrews 17-8

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Pfeiffer University’s James Shepherd (St. John, New Brunswick) scored a career-high seven goals in a 17-8 victory over St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Conference Carolinas men’s lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon. Shepherd would start the day with the first two goals of the match as the Falcons improve to 6-1 overall, 1-0 in league play. The loss sends the Knights below .500 at 4-5, 0-1.
Robert Hope (Peterborough, Ontario) would assist on Shepherd’s first strike 2:29 into the first while Shepherd went by himself 1:56 later. Kory Lutes (Orlando, FL) would put the hosts up three at 7:23 before assisting on a Nick Berkompas (Webster, NY) score with 2:28 left in the first. The Knights’ Alex Tindall (Edmonds, WA) would score hit first of three on the day with 26 seconds left as the Falcons carried a 4-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.
In the second, Lutes and Shepherd continued the ball rolling with goals 1:13 apart before Tucker Hammock (Marietta, GA) got into the action with 4:31 left before the half. Hope would assist on both Shepherd and Hammock’s goals. After a man-up goal by Tindall, SAPC’s Nick Hund would strike with 10 seconds left as Pfeiffer carried a 7-3 lead at the break.
The Falcons would come out in the second half to outscore St. Andrews 6-1 creating the final bit of separation. Lutes and Shepherd would start the third quarter the same way as they did in the second while Elliot Gilbert (Corning, NY), Shepherd, Berkompas and Hope each tallied after the Knights’ Steven Tramonte (Coral Springs, FL) at the 10:43 mark.
Each team would score four times in the final 15 minutes as Daniel Shields (Mercer Island, WA) started things off for SAPC while the Falcons reeled off the next four led by two more from Shepherd. The Knights hit for the final three of the afternoon, all in a 1:11 span, to end the afternoon.
The Falcons outshot the Knights 41-26 on the day while scooping up 37 groundballs to St. Andrews 15. Billy Rawson (St. Charles, IL) led the Falcons with 10 groundballs while going 16-of-28 in the faceoff circle. Matthew Rabung (Purcellville, VA) forced four turnovers to lead the hosts.
League play will now continue for the Falcons heading to Belmont Abbey on Wednesday for a 3:00 p.m. faceoff with the Crusaders.
