April 7, 2011
MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Pfeiffer University softball posted a pair of 5-0 shutouts on Thursday afternoon blanking King College in a non-conference doubleheader at Jack Ingram Field. The Lady Falcons held the Lady Tornado to just four hits on the day improving to 16-26 overall while King falls to 9-23.
In game one, Pfeiffer took advantage of two King miscues to post three runs in the bottom of the third. Mikaela Strickland (Bonifay, FL) tallied the first run on a throwing error while Celia Dew (Sanford, NC) singled home Melanie Conklin (Wellington, OH) later in the frame. Sarah Waylock (Cary, IL) completed the inning with a sacrifice fly to left that plated Hannah Jackson (Greensboro, NC). Two of the three runs were unearned.
In the fifth, the Lady Falcons added their other two runs, this time on a dropped fly ball by the Tornado defense. Rachel LaBar (Bradenton, FL) and Waylock would both score on the mistake as both reached with one out singles.
Allison Braswell (Asheboro, NC) earned the victory in the opener allowing just three hits with four strikeouts. Aubree Hutt (Bristol, VA), Christy Kooch (Knoxville, TN) and Lauren Wilson (Abington, VA) each had a hit for the Lady Tornado.
The nightcap saw Conklin and Shelby Brown (South Hill, VA) combine for a one-hit shutout in another 5-0 win. The lone King hit broke up the no-hit bid in the sixth as Natasha Dean (Church Hill, TN) led off with a clean single up the middle. Conklin went five plus frames allowing the one hit with six strikeouts while Brown finished with two innings of work with a pair of strikeouts.
Pfeiffer started with two runs in the first on two more King errors as Waylock and Dew both scored on a dropped pop up over at first. In the third, Waylock and Jackson each picked up RBI to make it 4-0 while the final run came in the fourth on an Amber Johnson (Spokane, WA) infield single.
The Lady Falcons will play their final home game of 2011 on Saturday with senior day against Shaw. Braswell and Waylock will be honored before first pitch at 11:00 a.m.
