Late Goal Propels Newberry Past Women's Soccer 1-0 in Season Opener
September 1, 2011
MISENHEIMER, N.C. – With just 5:57 left in regulation, a long pass by Cassie Smith (Spartanburg, SC) to a breaking Mary Stanton (Greenville, SC) proved to be the only goal needed as Newberry College tallied a 1-0, season-opening victory over Pfeiffer University in non-conference women’s soccer action on Thursday afternoon. The win keeps Newberry unbeaten against the Lady Falcons in the last seven contests moving to 5-0-2.
The Wolves held a 17-6 advantage in shots with Stanton’s in the 84th minute being enough. From deep in the defensive zone, Smith flew a pass over midfield and to a streaking Stanton who chipped her shot over charging keeper Jamie Alcala (Fredericksburg, VA) for the lone goal.
Both teams got off to a slow start in 2011 as neither team fired a shot early on. Newberry’s Brayden Miller (Lyman, SC) took the season’s first attempt in the 17th minute as her blast went wide right. The Wolves controlled the first half in the shots category 5-1 while the Lady Falcons were whistled six times for being offsides. Sheena Regan (Chesapeake, VA) took the lone shot of the first 45 minutes for Pfeiffer on a header in the 23rd minute.
Pfeiffer had play stopped eight times for being offsides compared to Newberry’s two. Six different Lady Falcons took each of the half dozen shots on the day with half of those being on frame. Alcala turned away seven shots in the defeat.
Pfeiffer returns to the home pitch on Saturday afternoon hosting UNC-Pembroke at 1:00 p.m. Live stats will be available courtesy of http://www.gofalconsports.com.
