September 8, 2011
MISENHEIMER, N.C. – A pair of first half goals in a two-and-a-half minute span was just enough as Pfeiffer University held off Francis Marion 2-1 in men’s soccer action on Thursday afternoon. The Falcons open up their home slate at N.E. Lefko Field notching their first win of the season moving to 1-2 while the Patriots drop to 0-3.
Scoring started in the 22nd minute as Luke Janes (Morrisville, NC) put in his first of the year after a cross inside the 18 from Ben Lloyd (Wycombe, ENGLAND). Lloyd would thentally the eventual game winner two minutes later as a deep throw in by Ethan Sacco (Concord, NC) started the play. Sacco found Taylor Scalera (Dacula, GA) who then found Lloyd for the strike just inside the left post.
A second half flurry by the Patriots made things interesting at the end as Igor Souza (Sao Paulo, BRAZIL) took a rebound and fired into a wide open net in the 85th minute. The final minutes of play remained deep in the Patriots’ offensive zone, but the Falcons defense stood tall in front of keeper Zach Liles (Cumming, GA) to hold on for the win.
Liles made three saves in the victory as Francis Marion fired off 24 shots in the match to Pfeiffer’s 14. However, only four of the Patriot shots made it on goal while the Falcons had one more with five. FMU registered 10 corners in the match, six for Pfeiffer, with eight of those coming in the final 45 minutes.
Pfeiffer returns to the home pitch on Saturday afternoon hosting Belmont Abbey in the 2011 Conference Carolinas opener. The men will begin at 4:00 p.m. after the women’s contest at 2:00 p.m. Live stats will be available through http://www.gofalconsports.com.
