September 10, 2011
MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Pfeiffer University tried to rally late in the second half, but eventually ran out of time as Belmont Abbey claimed a 3-2 win in Conference Carolinas men’s soccer action on Saturday afternoon at N.E. Lefko Field. The Crusaders even to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in league play while the Falcons drop to 1-3, 0-1.
Timmi Borges Da Silva (London, ENGLAND) got things started with an incredible goal in the 10th minute of action. From the sideline left of the cage, Da Silva somehow got a shot off and found the top right corner of the goal on a direct angle for a 1-0 Belmont Abbey lead. The Crusaders would maintain that advantage at the break holding a 4-2 margin in shots.
In the second half of play, Michael Valencia (Greenwood, SC) put the visitors up a pair with a shot into the back right corner of the cage after corralling a loose ball in front of the six. Pfeiffer’s Dale Ashford (Suwanee, GA) would put the Falcons on the board in the 86th minute as a frantic finish saw three goals over the final 4:49. Kyle Toler (Charlotte, NC) delivered a quick touch pass over to Ashford who unleashed a rocket into the top left corner.
After making it a one goal contest, the Crusaders’ Ross Smith (Shelf Halifax, ENGLAND) responded just 28 seconds later with a quick strike to put the visitors back up two. Off a Belmont Abbey foul, two quick touches by Niko Andrade (Gainesville, GA) and Ashford found the foot of Taylor Scalera (Dacula, GA) who ended scoring with his first of the season with just 28 ticks to go.
Pfeiffer held a 15-13 shots advantage overall while the Crusaders put eight of theirs on cage to the Falcons five. The Falcons took a commanding 12-4 advantage in corners, being unable to put any in the back of the net.
Monday will see the Falcons back on the pitch as they travel to Newberry for a 4:00 p.m. non-conference matchup with the Wolves.
