Men and Women's Cross Country Put Up Strong Finishes at UNC-Wilmington's Seahawk Invitational

WILMINGTON, N.C. - It was beautiful weather for running this weekend as Pfeiffer’s cross country teams completed their second race of the season at UNC-Wilmington’s Seahawk Invitational. In a field consisting of nearly 100 athletes from both Division I and II teams, Campbell’s DeLohnni Nicol-Samuel won the men’s race with a 15:24 finish while UNCW won the overall team event. DII standout Ericka Skinner from Barton won easily out of the women with an 18:12, with Campbell posting the team win.
After a few weeks of being plagued with injuries, the Pfeiffer men returned three notable runners to racing form for the 5k race. Junior Will Oliver scored first for the Falcons, placing 39th running a 17:10. Sophomore Josh Roberts, having missed the first meet due to injury, put forth an incredible effort and placed second for the team, running a 17:50. Trey Sharpe ran in the third spot, finishing in 18:07. Jeff McClure, a freshman, ran an 18:13 followed by junior Zack Allen at 18:26. Freshman Joe Sutlive finished his first collegiate race after being held back by injuries, completing an 18:47. Cody Jones, also coming back from an injury, finished four seconds later. The Falcons finished up the day’s running with sophomores Cody Bivens (18:56) and Fred Travis (20:53).
The Lady Falcons came in 2nd place out of eight Division II teams, edged out only by Barton College. Over a 5k course, senior Kaitlyn Mullis ran a 20:33 to come in second place out of DII runners. Freshman Megan Hunsucker posted a 21:22 in the second spot on the team, while fellow freshman Justine Serje ran an impressive 21:47 after battling sickness this past week. junior Vlada Mouravieva came in just three seconds later while junior April Hinson (25:34) and sophomore Nina Ubabuike (25:41) finished up for the Falcons. The team ended up concluding 5th overall out of 11 squads.
The teams will have two solid weeks off before travelling to Wingate University for the Bulldog Stampede on September 24.
