Amerell's 21 Kills Leads Women's Volleyball to 3-2 Knock Out of Mount Olive

Box Score

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Led by Kim Amerell’s (Lynchburg, VA) match-high 21 kills, Pfeiffer University shot down Mount Olive College 3-2 (22-25, 25-20, 25-7, 21-25, 15-13) in Conference Carolinas women’s volleyball action on Saturday afternoon inside the Merner Gym. Pfeiffer improves to 5-5 overall, 2-1 in league play, while the Trojans, who suffered their second-straight five-set loss in as many nights committing 66 errors, fall to 4-9, 1-5.

In the fifth and decisive set, a rare Lady Falcon service error set up a 6-3 advantage for Mount Olive playing to 15. After three-straight kills by Amerell, Pfeiffer had clawed their way back into the set forcing a Trojan timeout. Both teams would trade five leads in and nine ties throughout the decider. Kelly Lancellot (Naples, FL) and Amerell battled to give Pfeiffer a 14-12 match point lead as a Carly White (Ash, NC) kill and subsequent service error gave the Lady Falcons a 15-13 set and 3-2 match win.

Two hours earlier in the afternoon, the Trojans registered a three-point opening set win for a 1-0 match lead to start the day. Up 22-21, White would put down one of her 16 kills on the afternoon followed by an ace to help aid Mount Olive to the win as the final point came on a Talita Rocha (Contagem, BRAZIL) kill. Pfeiffer never had the lead back after a 7-6 advantage early on.

The Lady Falcons came stomping back in the second racing out to a 7-2 lead on three more Mount Olive miscues and service ace by Colleen Wands (Apex, NC). A later kill by Amerell pushed the lead to 19-12 before picking up three more kills in a four-play span for a 22-17 advantage. Kelsey Blauser (Round Rock, TX) and Milana Mervosh (Roebuck, SC) would pick up the sets final kills to even the match at one apiece.

The third set belonged entirely to Pfeiffer in a 25-7 dominating win that started by a 12-0 run. Meghan Davis (Fulton, MO) served up the first dozen points getting four aces and two kills by Lancellot, coupled with another vast variety of Trojan errors. Lancellot and Amerell continued to roll midway through the set while Cate Glendenning (Holly Springs, NC) and Taylor Houser (Mount Holly, NC) put up two more of Pfeiffer’s 12 aces for a 2-1 match lead.

To force a fifth and deciding set, Mount Olive came back from the terrible loss in set three to post a four-point, 25-21 win in the fourth. Like much of the afternoon, both teams went back-and-forth as the Trojans, down 20-18, use a kill from Dezirae Mackey (San Antonio, TX) and ace by Lauren Lee (Mount Olive, NC) to knot the contest 20-all. After White and Amerell traded kills to make it 21-21, two Pfeiffer errors, an ace by Charnel Austin (Ramstein, GERMANY) and kill by White set up the dramatic fifth set.

Amerell was the only Lady Falcon to post double-digit kills as Pfeiffer used 12 players in the match, five of which were reserves. Glendenning assisted a match-high 41 times while Wands led the way with 13 digs off the bench. Houser followed one back of Wands with a dozen digs.

White led the way for Mount Olive posting 16 kills followed by Mackey’s 12. Austin picked up 39 assists while Lee posted 16 kills. Pfeiffer also defeated Mount Olive in the departments of hitting percentage, aces and blocks to aid in the five-set win.

Pfeiffer returns to conference and east division action on Tuesday night hosting Coker inside the Merner Gym. First serve will fly at 7:00 p.m. with live stats and video available through http://www.gofalconsports.com.
