Salihovic Sparks Comeback with Two Late Goals as Men's Soccer Snaps Skid with 2-1 Victory over St. Andrews
October 13, 2011
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Trailing 1-0 midway through the second half, Pfeiffer University senior Fahret Salihovic (Charlotte, NC) took matters into his own hands scoring a pair of late goals to lead the Falcons to a 2-1 victory over St. Andrews in Conference Carolinas men’s soccer action on Thursday afternoon. The match was played on the fast turf pitch of the Harrisburg Road Sports Complex after N.E. Lefko Field was still unplayable after the week’s rain. The win snaps an eight-game skid for the Falcons moving to 2-10 overall, 1-6 in league play. The Knights loss sends them to 2-10, 1-8 after Thursday.
After a scoreless first half, the Knights got on the board first as Michael Mutebi (Kampala, UGANDA) put home his fifth of the season after forcing a turnover at midfield. Forcing the Falcons hand, Mutebi went all the way from the midfield stripe to beat keeper Zach Liles (Cumming, GA) for a 1-0 lead four minutes into the second.
Later in the 65th minute, Salihovic would even things up converting the first of his two free kick opportunities on the day. After a Knights foul outside the 18, Salihovic bent his attempt inside the right post for the equalizer and his third of the year. Six minutes later after another St. Andrews foul on the right side of the 18, Salihovic snuck his shot in through traffic left post for the eventual game-winner.
The Falcons held a 15-8 and 6-4 advantage in shots and shots on goal. Liles would make three saves in net during the win while Corey Francis (Greenville, NC) stopped four attempts in the loss.
Pfeiffer returns to the league pitch on Saturday heading to King for their first-ever conference tilt with the Tornado. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
