October 18, 2011
MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - Down in the fifth set by scores of 13-8 and facing five match points starting at 14-9, Pfeiffer University used three-straight block assists by Kelly Lancellot to turn the tide in a 22-20 wild set five and 3-2 (25-23, 21-25, 20-25, 25-16, 22-20) victory over Mount Olive in Conference Carolinas women's volleyball action on Tuesday night. With Lancellot, Cate Glendenning participated in two of the three crucial block assists while Erin Gray helped take care of the other. The Lady Falcons improve to 11-11 overall, 6-7 in league play, while the Trojans fall to 8-10, 5-6.
The win snapped a three-game skid for Pfeiffer and a six-game win streak for Mount Olive. The victory also provides a crucial tiebreaker for the upcoming conference tournament as the Lady Falcons sweep the season series from their divisional opponent.
Facing match point down 14-9 in the fifth set, Milana Mervosh put down her final kill of the night while Gray followed suit to make it 14-11 with a Mount Olive timeout. After back-to-back blocks by Lancellot and Glendenning forced another timeout at 14-13, Lancellot and Gray stuffed an attack attempt by Carly White to knot the contest at 14 giving the Lady Falcons new life.
Pfeiffer had five match points before sealing the deal while having to stave off two more match points by Mount Olive. Kills by Jessica Homrich and Kelsey Blauser continued the match during the final 10 plays while a final Lancellot/Blauser block set up the final match point for Pfeiffer as a Mount Olive attack error ended the contest.
The night of comebacks started in the first set of the evening as Pfeiffer trailed 17-12 after a service ace by the Trojans' Nicole Sparks. Three-straight Mount Olive miscues brought the Lady Falcons back at 21-21 before a pair of Homrich kills an ace by Taylor Houser put the visitors up 1-0.
White led the way for Mount Olive in sets two and three before Pfeiffer started their second comeback of the night in set four. The non-dramatic fourth set saw the Lady Falcons score seven points in an eight-play span to help create the final nine point differential. Jordan O'Bryant helped force the final thriller with a kill to end set four 25-16.
O'Bryant led a balanced Pfeiffer attack with 11 kills on the night followed by Homrich's nine to hit .333. Glendenning dished out 36 assists while Kaci Markham led with a dozen digs.
White led all attackers on the night with 23 kills in a losing effort for the Trojans. Erika Conner followed with 12 while Dezirae Mackey concluded with 11. Charnel Austin sent up a match-high 50 assists in the loss.
