W. BASKETBALL

BLOG #2: Plays, Points and Pumpkins

There is certainly a lot one needs to learn in the first ten practices.  Brain overload for some.  Lucky for us, Fall Break just happened to coincide with October 15th this year, the date we are allowed to officially begin practices with the team.
This gave us a bit more time to focus and process many new drills, concepts and principles of Pfeiffer Women’s Basketball.  While as coaches we never feel as if we have enough time to teach what we would like, the week has been beneficial to us.

In the midst of practice, it is nice to be able to spend time together as a team off of the court.  Instead of battling for position in the post or stopping someone’s middle drive, it is important to bond using creativity and fun outside of the gym.

Not only does October signal the beginning of basketball season (well, the collegiate season anyway…do not get me started on the current absence of NBA games), the crisp, fall air also signals that Halloween is approaching.  In an attempt to be festive, Coach Thomas and I paired up the girls, purchased pumpkins and carving kits to put their artistic skills to the test.  For preventative measures, Coach and I cut the tops of the pumpkins off ourselves.  The last thing we need is a player on the sidelines with an injury from Mr. Jack-O-Lantern.

Some came prepared with stencils and props, while others had no idea where to start.  Some were absorbed in concentration, while others were more interested what piece of candy they could scrounge up to snack on.  But all in all, each pumpkin turned out surprisingly well and each team was proud of their finished product.  The nighttime darkness and tea lights added the final touch.

As much time and diligence went into each carving, the girls sure took a liking to throwing the pumpkins over the fence into the woods and smashing them into trees.

Hey, at least Coach and I made off with all of the seeds and baked them into deliciousness for ourselves.  No losses there.
