MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – No. 2 seed Mount Olive saw its best season in five years come to a close as the Trojans fell to No. 7 seed Pfeiffer 1-0 in the first round of the 2011 Conference Carolinas Women's Soccer Tournament Monday at Amon Field. The entire match was played in a windy rainstorm with temperatures never getting above 50 degrees. Pfeiffer (9-9-1) plays at No. 3 seed Belmont Abbey Thursday in the semifinal round.
The Trojans were outshot 7-3 in the first half, but Cara Paxson blocked a Pfeiffer shot in the box midway through the half and goalkeeper Lyndsey McIntyre made a pair of saves on close range shots to keep the match scoreless at halftime.
Pfeiffer broke the deadlock at the 59:52 mark when Alyssa Wombwell crossed to Hannah Hill for an open 18-yard shot. Mount Olive had its best chance to tie on Lindsey Stanley's shot in the 73rd minute, but Falcon goalkeeper Jamie Alcala came up with the save. The Trojans did not get another shot attempt the remainder of the match.
The Trojans subbed attackers for defenders in the final minutes for a last-ditch comeback attempt. Mount Olive tried to force a corner kick with less than a minute left, but the ball was ruled off of the Trojans, giving Pfeiffer a goal kick. The Falcons were able to keep the ball in the Trojans' half until the final horn.
McIntyre finished with three saves for Mount Olive, while Alcala had two saves for Pfeiffer. The Falcons finished with a 14-5 shot advantage.
