January 3, 2012
LAURINBURG, N.C. - Paced by Reggie Hollinger's double-double with 27 points and 10 rebounds, Pfeiffer University notched a 79-69 victory at host St. Andrews in the 2011-2012 Conference Carolinas men's basketball league opener. The Falcons improve to 7-4 overall, 1-0 in league play while the Knights drop to 5-8, 0-1.
Pfeiffer got off to a slow start on Tuesday night as a pair of Antonio Moffitt free throws gave St. Andrews an early 10 point lead just 4:18 in. Down by as much as 13, the Falcons ripped off an 18-0 run that started with a Hollinger jumper in a span of less than five minutes.
Two free throws from Danny Smith knotted the contest at 24 while a three-ball by KC Anuna put the Falcons up eight, 32-24 with 2:46 before the half. Ryan Streater would help stop the bleeding for the Knights with a pair of late free throws as Pfeiffer held a 37-33 lead at the break.
Streater and Aaron Christian would slice the Falcon lead down to just two a couple of times early in the second before Hollinger again dropped crucial baskets to keep momentum on the visitor's side. Hollinger, along with a triple from Elijah Matthews, sent Pfeiffer up by as much as 14 late in the second while cashed-in opportunities from the charity stripe allowed the Falcons to grab the double-digit win.
Behind Hollinger's 27 and 10, Smith followed with 20 points on the night while Anuna chipped in with 11. The Knights picked up a game-high 26 from Streater as one of three in double-figures. Both teams struggled from the floor as Pfeiffer shot 39% in the win while maintaining a 44-40 advantage in rebounds.
Next for the Falcons will be their league home opener on Thursday night hosting Mount Olive. Tip time is set for 7:30 p.m. with live stats and video being available through http://www.gofalconsports.com.
