February 14, 2012
MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Shooting a lights out 65% from the field, 62% from long range knocking down 13 triples, Queens University of Charlotte went on to roll Pfeiffer University 89-66 in Conference Carolinas men’s basketball on Wednesday night. The Royals improve to 17-7 overall, 12-1 in league play, while the Falcons dip to 11-12, 5-8.
Pfeiffer’s lone bright spots of the night came within the first 2:16 as KC Anuna (Nashville, TN) and Danny Smith (Baltimore, MD) raced the Falcons out to a 7-0 start. A three-point play by Sam Johnson (Leicester, NC) 55 seconds later would completely turn the night around for the visitors.
Brent Evans (Beaufort, SC) would put Queens up five, 15-10, with 13:20 before the half in front of a three ball from David Cheek (Graham, NC). Cheek started an 11-0 run that was capped off by a Nate Blackburn trey giving the Royals a 28-14 lead with 7:46 on the clock. After Evans put the Royals up as much as 15 in the first half, a three from the Falcons’ Daniel Kuhl (Winter Springs, FL) would slice the lead down to a dozen at the break, 44-32.
Pfeiffer would show signs of life early in the second as a triple from Anuna got the Falcons to within five at 44-39 just 2:16 in. Again, Queens would bolt out on another massive run, this one a 23-6 spurt that would send the Royals up 22, coming up on the halfway point of the second. Pfeiffer would try and stay close with a three by Smith with 6:16 remaining, but the Royals’ hot hands couldn’t miss going up as much as 25 before time expired.
Blackburn and Daniel Bailey (Irmo, SC) each scored a game-high 19 for Queens while Evans and Sean Eads (Greenville, SC) scored 15 and 12 respectively. The Royals shot a remarkable 77% in the second half in addition to going 7-of-10 from behind the arc. Pfeiffer was led by Smith’s 17 and Anuna’s 16 despite the team being limited to 44% shooting and just 28% from long distance. The Royals would hold a +10 rebound margin, 29-19, and hand out 11 more assists than Pfeiffer 21-10.
