Women's Lacrosse Uses Goals from 11 Different Players to Roll Lees-McRae 23-0 in Season/League Opener

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Backed by 17 first-half goals, Pfeiffer University cruised to a 23-0 shutout win over Lees-McRae College in Conference Carolinas women’s lacrosse on Wednesday afternoon. The Lady Falcons win their season opener with Natalie Marvin’s (South Berwick, ME) four goals leading the way while the Bobcats fall to 0-2 overall, 0-2 in league play.

Katherine Athens (Huntingtown, MD) got the afternoon’s scoring underway just 39 seconds in for the Lady Falcons. Marvin and Kristi Korn (Rochester, NY) followed over the next four minutes while Liz Melesh (Annapolis, MD) scored her first of three soon after. Shannon Bonnel (Mechanicsville, MD) would assist on the next three goals to Sarah Daly (New Market, MD), Athens and Rachel Hebberd (Golden, CO) making it 7-0 with 22:16 to play in the first half.

Melesh put home her second off of a Daly pass before Lorin Lord (Summerville, SC) notched her first on a free position shot. Hebberd, Marvin and Bonnel would each strike again during the midway point of the first, before Marvin and Melesh went back-to-back just under a minute later. Korn would round out the half with two-straight goals while Haley Gourdie (Clermont, FL) closed out the first 30 minutes hitting with six seconds remaining.

Six second-half goals started with Marvin’s fourth and final of the day 3:36 in while Athens soon followed with her own hat trick five minutes later. Ashley West (Warrenton, VA) and Laura Shea (Damascus, MD) would each find the back of the net during the closing minutes while Bonnel and Gourdie each accounted for the final Lady Falcon strikes.

Bonnel would end up with four assists in the game while Marvin followed closely behind with three. Bonnel corralled eight draw controls while Marvin led the way with four groundballs. Jamie Alcala (Fredericksburg, VA) posted four saves in the shutout victory in net.

Pfeiffer will get back to action on Saturday heading to Lenoir-Rhyne for their first road contest of the season at 12:00 p.m.
